And carried over a decent (at least rotational) center in Varejo. The Cavs should be so much further ahead than where they are now to the point where they should have at least had a debate if they even needed Lebron. Imagine what this team would look like if they had even a semi competent GM...

The amount they've given up for being in "win now" mode is getting very excessive, especially if this season doesn't fall in place (and it likely won't until after their upcoming Western road trip). But it's a bit of a stretch to think they could be further ahead where they are now, let alone debating if they'd need LeBron (c'mon man!). The only *superstar* (in the making) in these past 4 drafts has been Anthony Davis, Kyrie is a tier below him I'd say, and last years draft continues to look like a major bust all around. But the best teams that have built in the draft (Wizards, Thunder) had plenty of turmoil until they got into their 4th years and found a groove. The current play of the Cavs is atrocious, but seeing as how they'll likely finish in the top 5 of the East regardless is, at best, where'd they'd be with our without their draft picks.

I'd say Rose, Noah, Butler, Gibson is the best team built through the draft...

Have you heard of Westbrook, Durant, Ibaka, Reggie Jacks and throw in Harden for good measure

JR and Waiters represent fairly similar players in that they are streaky scorers who can come off the bench and provide a spark or alternatively shoot you into a bigger hole. The difference is that whereas Waiters likes to have the ball in his hands and shoot off the dribble, JR is a better spot up shooter, especially on 3's. This is obviously a better fit in Cleveland where you already have 2 guys that like to handle the ball in LBJ and Irving.

Regarding the contracts, yes it hurts that JR has his player option for 6.4m next year but Waiters would be getting 5m next year (assuming they pick up his team option, which I think they would) so its not a HUGE difference. Still, yeah its not great, especially if JR can't step up his game a bit. There are also character/chemistry concerns about JR I guess, though I think Waiters had similar concerns as well.

They also get shumpert who, when healthy, is exactly the type of player the Cavs need - a good defender, and decent all-arounder on the offensive end who doesn't need the ball much. If he can shoot around 35%+ from 3, and play good D, then he is a great fit.

Perhaps most importantly, this move gives them depth and more athleticism on the wings which they badly needed. Having Waiters on the court with another guard (Irving or Della) was always a problem as it meant an undersized backcourt with little versatility on switches and jut generally bad defensively. This also means that Dellavadova can return to his role as the back-up PG and won't need to spot minutes as the off-guard. It also helps the rotation so end of the bench guys like Price and Jones arent getting minutes.

Finally they get the Thunder 1st rounder which could fall around 20 this year which represents some decent value.

well said.
