Phil Jackson has agreed to serve in an advisory capacity in the Detroit Pistons' search for a head coach.

“Phil Jackson is a friend and one of the best minds in the business,” owner Tom Gores said. “We are thrilled to have him as an adviser as we make some very important decisions for this franchise. Joe (Dumars) and I discussed this and he and I are in full agreement that this is a great opportunity.”

Jackson's position will not be formal, but rather as an adviser for now. Joe Dumars said in a statement that he welcomes Jackson's input.

“Tom and I discussed using a consultant as part of our decision-making process in our search for a head coach and we feel that Phil Jackson is a great resource to use,” Dumars said. “I look forward to talking with Phil next week.”

Jackson has reportedly been seeking a front office role within an organization instead of a coaching job.

For Phil, its easy money, little or no responsibility if it doesn't work out, and best of all, he doesn't have to move to Detroit!

Best move the Pistons have done in a while. Get a guy that knows coaches to fix their embarrassing coaching trend. Go Gores!

Best move the Pistons' have made in a while? Sure, it was not made by Joe. Gore, work some magic. Sorry Joe, but say good-bye to Joe and hello Phil. You are the new GM.

You would think that Phil would know the qualities of a superior coach and be able to identify those qualities in the candidates for the Pistons job. But then again, Michael Jordan was the best player of his generation and maybe the best ever, but he can't pick the best players with top 10 picks in the draft if his life depended on it. (However, he's getting a little better with some professional basketball management help.) My point is that being the greatest player or coach does not necessarily translate to identifying your successors.
