That's a pretty large contract he has to live up to.

Splitter really showed his flaws in the Finals. When Duncan wasn't in the game, the Heat got to the rim with ease. Splitter is a clueless help defender and he has no shot blocking ability whatsoever. He can't even alter shots. It was so frustrating watching the Heat pick the team apart when an aging Duncan was on the bench. I understand that Splitter is a relatively 'smart' player- he sets screens well, tries hard to rebound, makes an effort on defense etc. I was actually hoping that Pops would let McGrady take a shot at center while Duncan was out. As sad as that sounds, he would have protected the rim better than Splitter. Now, he gets 9 million a year? What a joke. I know skilled big men are hard to come by, but I think the Spurs would have been smarter to target someone more athletic.

Splitter under Duncan can learn, he did well in the Playoffs until the NBA Finals.

9 million for a young starting center is relatively cheap in today NBA heck Deandre Jordan is getting 10million he dont even worth 7million. Giving his size and potential to grow under Duncan and Pop, i think its a win-win situation.

28 isn't really considered "young" and he's been playing pro ball since he was 14 years old
Harden is still a work-in-progress. He can score, but he can't help his teammate that much - Yao Ming
