Griffin Ready To Share Closer Duties With Paul

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Thu Aug 15, 2013 4:07 pm

Blake Griffin is ready to split the Los Angeles Clippers’ closing duties with Chris Paul.

"[Paul] has a huge role on this team," Griffin said. "He's been the guy who has closed out a lot of games late for us.
"But in my mind, this is the year I need to step into that role and really help him shoulder that load. I'll be right there with him at the end of games, being the guy that he can always count on."

Griffin is working on his midrange shot, an area where he converted just 34 percent of his attempts last season.

"To be honest, I'm more excited about this upcoming season than I've ever been," Griffin said. "My workouts with [shooting coach] Bob Thate and our coaches have been geared around figuring out how I'm going to be used this season.

"I'm doing a lot of stuff at the elbow, a lot of shooting. One of the things [new coach Doc Rivers] said to me was, 'I don't want you to be afraid to go 0-for-15.' In other words, just have the mindset of a shooter. And with the work I've done this summer, I'm starting to get that confidence and think like a shooter."

BG would be a nightmare for the defender with a consistent jump shot.

Outside of a last minute apply-oop or free-throws I don't see how he can be a closer. If he does develop a consistent free-throw line, elbow jumper - watchhh out!

I will never understand how someone who has been paid several million dollars a year for the last 3 years is only now learning how to make a jump shot.

They will finish high in the standings but get knocked out early in the playoffs.

He was actually knocking down his jumpshot pretty well his rookie year since they were leaving him wide open.

From what I have seen with his jumper this past year, I really don't like it. He still releases the ball on the way down and is forcing some mechanical form similar to a smaller guard's jumpshot. It looks like he is measuring his shots rather than using a more natural rhythmic form that might work better with his size.

It's good to see him step up and show that confidence, though. I think the Clippers are realizing that Chris Paul isn't going to win them anything, but surrounded by good role players, they can contend.

Clippers-Nets Finals, baby!

Someone needs to tell Blake that bad FT shooters make bad closers.

Am I the only one who perceives something a little flawed with this approach?

A respectable midrange game is a great tool for a power forward to have in his bag, but for a player like Griffin it takes him away from the areas where he has the greatest advantage.
I think he would be better served by developing a reliable post repertoire where he can make use of his tremendous athleticism for easier scores. Especially on a team full of jump shooters already AND where you know you will get very little offensively from the center position.

A team with no post play won't get very far in the wild wild west.

Instead of trying to make highlight plays think about trying to win

People here are disgusting Blake beat majority of the teams he played with his beast foot work facing up and back to basket.

If Blake develops a mid-range game, he will become a more athletic Carlos Boozer (muscles with no defensive tenacity). The Clippers don't have Taj Gibson backing up the power forward and are thin in the front court.
It did take Tyson Chandler five seasons to figure out how to be a presence in the middle, so if DeAndre Jordan can get his sights on that evolving door perhaps he can make up the difference. Nonetheless, the Clippers are very deep and talented in the back court and could win 60+ games.
