Free agent guard B.J. Young – a recent release of the Rockets – will sign a deal with Houston’s D-League team, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, a league source told RealGM.

Young was released by the Rockets early in training camp, but the former Arkansas standout received interest from the Los Angeles Lakers and Philadlephia 76ers before deciding to join the Rockets’ burgeoning pipeline of young talent, a league source said.

Daryl Morey has stockpiled several talented players to play for the Rockets’ developmental team, which will include the recently waived Troy Daniels.

After averaging over 15 points and three assists in his sophomore season at the Unviersity of Arkansas, Young, 20 went undrafted in June’s NBA draft. He then played for the Rockets in summer league, displaying moments of explosiveness averaging nearly 12 points on 51.6 percent shooting and two assists.

he's looking at the long run. he wants a chance to develop his skills and get better, not just sit on a bench of the Lakers or Sixers get cut mid way through the season, and then be done with his career.

Considering Hinkie was a major player in the Rockets FO and was likely familiar with the players being waived, it makes sense.

Good to see that the way the Rockets run the Rio Grande Valley Vipers is being noticed by some players.

6'3 shooting guards are a very valuable commodity. I'm going to spend the rest of the day berating Jim Buss for failing to acquire BJ Young.

Young came in after Hinkie, but I'm sure that he was part of the process of scouting him early on. Hinkie was a major part of the player development & how they used the D-League. No doubt that he was on his radar.

Three of Morey's top guys were hired away by other franchises this summer (Sixers, Mavs & Nuggets). I think that all three guys will do very well in their new jobs.

Lakers will still compete this year. They made some okay signings in Young and Kaman and they have other projects in Wes Johnson and Xavier Henry.

Sixers are a joke, even though they have a team of scrubs, their direction is questionable and playing time would be in question.
