Luol Deng Rejected Three-Year, $30M Extension Offer From Bulls Last Week

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Tue Jan 7, 2014 6:57 am

The Chicago Bulls offered Luol Deng a three-year, $30 million extension last week.

Deng rejected the deal and was subsequently traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers in a financial move by the Bulls.

Deng and the Bulls also discussed an extension in the offseason.

Deng is in the final season of a $71 million contract signed in the 2008 offseason.

lol, bulls pissed him off by low balling him. Deng when healthy is better than igoudala who got 4 years 48 million from the warriors this past which was considered a discount. Cavs better be ready to pay him 5 years 60M+ to retain him.

Really? Didn't they give boozer like a 5 year 70 million dollar contract? 3 years 30 million for a guy who's probably your best player?

Right now the 14 million he is making is fair. Coming down to 12 or 13 would be okay for next year, but Deng has been Thibodea's whipping boy since 2010. Deng is coming down from his physical prime and has played a ton of minutes over the last three and a half seasons. Being a great defender is partially dependent on being athletic, and Deng might not have much longer before the wheels start to fall off. That being said, Luol is a fills a huge positional need for Cleveland and his presence in the locker room couldn't have come at a better time. For as "interestingly" as Chris Grant drafts it will be interesting to see if he can redeem himself in how he handles contract negotiations.

Boozer was signed in a different CBA agreement. Nowadays more than 10M to any player but super star could kill a team.

I think maybe four-year, $48 Mil is a reasonable contract for both sides.

This is what the Bulls wanted: to seem like they want to keep him so they can tell their fans "look, we tried", but at the same time to make sure Luol rejected the offer.

Cheap ass FO remains cheap ass.

Bulls fans are happy now, but I wonder how they'll react when Thibs leaves at the end of his contract and the Bulls bring in the cheapest replacement they find. Remember the VDN "era" ?

i think there is 2-3 year left at deng. after that he'll be next gerald wallece with afwul contract.

so i believe he want more than 3 year contract.
30m for 3 years contract would be a steal for bulls. but they know deng wont accept it. they're still cheap ass.

You do understand that Deng is only 28 years old? He has plenty left in the tank, but still, 30 mil for three years seems pretty fair value to me, it just looks like the guy overpriced himself.

Should have taken that money, or maybe he doesn't believe the Bulls are contenders anymore so hes asking for more money to stay with the team. I don't think he will stay with the Cavs for long, he will go to a true contender next season.

30 mil for three years is pretty fair value or even slightly overpaying possibly.

He is not only 28, he is nearly 29. In 3 months he'll be 29 with a lot of miles on those tires he's played a lot of minutes. So in 2-3 years he'll probably be a much lesser player that he is. He's at the peak of his career or on just turning the corner to the downhill slope.

LOL!! What are you smoking? Do you even have a grasp of what the market value for players are in the NBA, or are you just arbitrarily dictating the values at a whim?

A 2x All-Star and All-Defensive Team is worth more than $10/yr at age 29. Go look at how much free agents were being paid this past summer. Maybe you'll have noticed that guys who've never sniffed an All-Star game make $8M to $10M per year --- O.J. Mayo, Paul Millsap, and Tyreke Evans. Meanwhile players comparable to Luol Deng were pulling in at least $12M to $14M per year --- David West, Al Jefferson, Andre Iguodola, and Josh Smith.

And to add insult to injury, the Bulls were only offering a laughable 3-year deal when Luol Deng is eligible for 5 years from the Bulls (or 4 years from any other team). The Bulls were lowballing him in terms of the salary ($10M) and in terms of the contract length (3 years). And they want him to sign that contract instead of testing the free agent market? The offer was insulting.

The difference is that all of the guys you named (save Evans) stay healthy. Plus, despite being only 28, Deng has A LOT of mileage on his body. I want to see the dumbass team that screws itself over by offering Deng $12-14 million a year for five seasons. Not saying it won't happen, but it'll be funny if/when it does.

The Bull's offer was their way of telling Deng's camp that they want to go in a new direction in a professional way.

So the entire Bulls roster, coaching staff and front office should be working for the Knicks front office?
