Sources: Joe Dumars Plans To Resign As Pistons' President As Soon As This Week

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Tue Apr 8, 2014 1:45 pm

Joe Dumars plans to resign as president of the Detroit Pistons, possibly as soon as this week, according to sources.

The Pistons had expected to make the playoffs after signing Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings last offseason. Detroit instead is 28-49 and out of playoff contention.

Dumars took over in 2000, one year after retiring as a player, and immediately began making changes, culminating in an NBA title in 2004 and a return trip to the Finals the next season.

Dumars tried to save Maurice Cheeks' job earlier this season, but Tom Gores insisted on a chance.

I doubt he tried to save Mo Cheeks' job. He probably thought it was he or me.

Ingrates. He got a championship and if not for Rasheed, it would have been 2.
After Rose broke both his knees, I gave up on the hope that we'd make it to the NBA Finals again. It will probably be decades before we see another championship. Hello Treadmill, here we come.

We could also argue that they were pretty lucky to win even one championship. Atlanta gift-wrapped Sheed to them for pennies on the dollar (and sent the league into an uproar as a result) plus they ran into an injury riddled Laker team in the finals. Karl Malone was out and Shaq was far from 100%.

Looking at Dumar's legacy it's hard to determined if he was really good or just lucky? He landed Ben and Billups on the cheap in wake of Grant Hill bolting for Orlando in free-agency. Hill was one of the top 6-8 players in the league at that point and Detroit clearly would have taken him back if they could have. His preferred direction with Hill on board certainly wouldn't have produced any championships and obviously his post-contender direction was really awful.

The Pistons ended the Lakers dynasty when they had payton , kobe , malone and shaq. How can you say they were lucky ? Because of that Pistons team the defensive 3 second rule was created , that was truly a great defensive team and they definetly deserved to be champions. They also made it back to the finals and almost won again the following year , plus they had numerous trips to the conference finals. How can you say they were lucky win a championship ? that was a great team and the only team that could beat the lakers.
"We're like Tim Duncan and David Robinson," Villanueva said, following the team's morning shootaround at the America West Arena. "But a younger version. I really feel that."

Karl Malone was out, Shaq wasn't fully recovered, Gray Payton was just along for the championship and didn't do much, and Kobe can't win by himself. So yes, they had some luck. It wasn't all luck, but if the Lakers were fully healthy I doubt they could have won.

i think he was referring to the moment in game 6 where sheed left his man (horry) to double manu in the corner. manu immediately kicked it back out to horry and the rest is history. i still have nightmares about it...

Should not have got the job in the first place. Star players never become good GMs or coaches, with a few exceptions (Larry Bird, Danny Ainge).

The three second defensive technical was put in place when zone defenses were legalized after the 2000-2001 season to prevent guys like Mutumbo and Shaq from just planting themselves in the lane. It had nothing to do with Ben Wallace. Just wanted to correct the poster that made the statement that it was in response to the 2004 Pistons.

Between 2004 and 2008, Joe Dumars was elite status. Top 3 in the NBA at what he did.

But then Dumars didn't do much after that team's championship runs. He tried some experimenting, like Allen Iverson for a little while. Stuff that never really worked out.
