The New York Knicks will be interested in Pau Gasol in free agency, according to a source.

Gasol won two championships under Knicks president Phil Jackson and would not receive anything close to the $19.3 million per year that he made with the Los Angeles Lakers this season.

Gasol would have to accept the Knicks' taxpayer's midlevel exception of approximately $3.2 million.

Is this a joke? Pau Gasol is not going to play anywhere in the nba for 3M regardless if the team pursuing him is run by phil jackson or red auerbach. Gasol can get an annual salary close to 10M if he goes back and plays in the spanish league where he would still be a marketable superstar. If the knicks want to pursue him with a competitive offer it will only be possible if they let melo walk and the lakers agree to a sign and trade. Knicks can't participate in sign and trades if they resign melo and are over the tax line. I think the bulls are getting rid of boozer this offseason either through a trade or amnesty. I could see the bulls offering gasol a tim duncan type contract of three years 30M so they will have max cap room again in 2017 when both gasol and derrick rose's contracts come off the books. Bulls need to make a major free agent acquisition this summer because after jimmy butler is extended, they won't have any cap room for the foreseeable future.

I don't get why people think gasol will get desperate with his next contract. It was already reported that there are multiple teams in the European league especially the spanish ones that are prepared to offer him a multi-year deal with an annual salary close to 10M. He is still a very marketable superstar in Spain and Europe. The only way he stays in the nba next season is if he is offered a multi-year contract by a contender at a reasonable figure. Gasol's situation is identical to when the pacers signed David West the first time away from the hornets after he tore his acl during the 2011 playoffs. He will probably sign a two or 3 year deal.

Not quite, gasol loves living in LA. I could see him signing an inflated one year deal with the lakers if they strike out with the 2014 nba free agent class. The odds increase if D'antoni gets canned. Lakers may offer gasol 15-20M on a one year deal so they will have cap space to go after kevin love or lamarcus aldridge in 2015.

I wouldn't mind a sign and trade but there's not one player on that roster that I'd even want for free.
