LOL Love was never ever on the table for the Warriors to sign. Minnesota were just playing a game... they knew LeBron was a FA and likely to go back to Cleveland. Love even said he wanted to go to Cleveland if LeBron went there.
Why then would anyone think the Timberwolves would have agreed to trade Love to GSW so early on in the piece when he is still contracted for another year and they were under no pressure to trade him... and they knew Cleveland could give them more than any other NBA team could offer.
Most trades of that magnitude happen around around the draft, not weeks/months after free agency begins--- 99% of GMs look to trade for a lottery pick, not forgo the opportunity to draft your own prospect that high in the draft. By the account of literally every report I've read on the subject, if Klay Thompson had been offered up, Kevin Love would be in The Bay right now.
Instead they decided to play hard ball and Lebron came out of left field and took them out of the picture. IMO this guy effed up BIG TIME. They just half assed a bid on a top ten player and I don't see how they get significantly better from where they are now going forward. This is is your maxxed out GS Warriors right now, and they're not championship-caliber. Not seeing the upside of keeping Klay out of talks before Lebron made his decision.
They got significantly better by bringing in any coach not named Mark Jackson. That's probably already a +10 improvement on offense. Can't stress enough how bad a coach Jackson was... so it already is addition by subtraction.
Also it wasn't just about Klay Thompson. It was about gutting our team of 3 our starting 5 from our 5th seed year.... by losing Lee, Thompson and Barnes. Barnes underachieved last year but I blame Jackson as much for that. Barnes is a slasher not the ISO player that Jackson forced him to be.
I also cannot possibly see how giving up that much for basically a younger slightly better offensive upgrade on David Lee... that still is a horrible defender is worth it.
Love might be considered by some to be a top 10 player but he ain't LeBron and he literally did nothing to make the Wolves a winning team in the time he was there.
As for Klay Thompson he is young and an elite 3 point shooter who has finished top 3 the last 2 years in the league behind Curry... and who towards the end of the season also became a go to the basket scorer.
I'd rather keep Lee, Barnes and Thompson than bring in an offensive guy that can't play defense and doesn't win... and I would rather see what Kerr can do with these players. The Warriors problem last year wasn't their starting 5... it was rated the best started 5 in the league. It was the non-existent bench. We've done well in the off-season strengthening that with Livingston, Barbosa and co. I'm happy that we are a better team than we were last year.
