Tristan Thompson Seeking Extension Worth $11M Per Season

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Tue Sep 23, 2014 6:29 pm

Tristan Thompson will seek a contract that begins at $11 million per season.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have not yet engaged Thompson on an extension.

Thompson is represented by Rich Paul, who is also the agent of LeBron James.

Thompson will become a restricted free agent if he's unable to agree upon an extension.

Rich Paul smokes the crack pipe again.

First he tells Eric Bledsoe, a career 8ppg backup, that he is a max player and now he's saying Tristan Thompson is an 11M per year player.

He could have got a lot more w/ Wiggins & Bennett on rookie contracts.

But after the KLove trade there is no way can the Cavs pay him 11 mil. He will need to take 6 or 7 to stay w/ LeBron, Love, Kyrie & Co.

Hey Tristan, not sure if you are aware but that would have you making Stephen Curry's salary and also there is someone at your position already by the name of Kevin Love. Unless you plan on becoming an elite shot blocker this year I would not expect that type of money from the Cavs because you are not a Top 10 PF yet. You will be their 6th man this year despite your strong showings the last 2 seasons at 11.7ppg/9.3rpg. I can see the Cav's trying to move him for a true center if they feel they won't be able to match his contract offers this upcoming off-season. At $5mil, he is very movable for a team looking to unload a contract or player (Roy Hibbert/Greg Monroe/Larry Sanders). Brooklyn needs a starting PF, maybe they would give up Mason Plumlee?

Thompson is a nice role playing PF but he's not worth $11 million per.

If he was a couple inches taller and playing C maybe (since the center position is a more valuable position).

But he's a PF, arguably the easiest position in the NBA to fill.

He doesn't do anything exceptionally well. He doesn't have a gimmicky game or particularly shining personality that might warrant a little over payment or some GM going overboard a little.

Maybe Paul is looking around the league at guys like Taj Gibson and thinking "Gibson is being paid about $8.5 million a season and Thompson's stats are better"? If so, I'm not sure many GM's in the league would consider Gibson a bargain contract.

hahahaha. Not only is Cavs not going to pay Tristan that kind of money. No team in the nba is going to pay him that kind of money. man whats up with all these players demanding more money then their worth these days... The only way he will get that is if some GM truly believes he'll be a star in the next 3 years and will take the investment

Smart man to ask for a big payout now. He knows his playing time, stats and overall market value is going to drop hard with Love, Irving and James taking all the minutes, shots and fame

Jason Lloyd's article was entirely speculation on what he expects Tristian Thompson will be seeking, there hasn't been any discussion at all from what he reported.

To quote "There are plenty of tentacles to a potential Thompson extension. He is represented by Rich Paul, who also represents LeBron. He will probably lose his starting spot (although we’ve already outlined how he could remain a starter). Becoming a reserve would decrease his minutes and productivity, yet playing alongside his new cast of teammates could simplify his role (run the floor and rebound) and make him a much better player.
He will ask for the type of money previously given to Derrick Favors (four years, $49 million) and Larry Sanders (four years, $44 million). What will hurt Thompson’s case, however, is the Greg Monroe saga. Monroe, by all accounts a better player than Thompson, was forced to sign a one-year qualifying offer with the Pistons after failing to reach agreement on a long-term contract with anyone this summer. He will now be an unrestricted free agent next summer."

I imagine the Cavs will play not negotiate a contract until next year, and if he moves to a bench role his numbers will decrease and they can play hardball with him. No reason at all they'd work on an extension with him right now.

I think he's worth a 4 year, $30 million contract right now.

Enjoy the ride Cleveland. Hearing this news, it's gonna be hard to find a taker for him since other teams will know he's not worth that much.

Rich Paul sucks. He won't negotiate I bet. Take it or leave it.

This is his way of asking for a trade. With Love there Tristan will get around 15 min a night at PF. And that's assuming they don't go small and use James at the 4. So he may play a bunch of minutes out of position at the 5. If they know his asking price is too high the may ship him out before the deadline. They really need a Center more than a PF anyway.

He's not even close to as good as Amir and definitely doesn't deserve more $$$.

Thompson was a bad starting PF on a bad team on the verge of becoming a backup PF on a good team. And he'll quite possibly be a backup for the rest of his career. There might be some room to grow but he's undersized, a poor shooter and a below average defender. Pretty much the opposite skill set you want out of a modern era PF. Needless to say this is a crazy asking price even in the current out if control market.

Probably not.
Having TT is one of the reasons LBJ is in C town. And Cleveland knew that a long time ago.

Good for him. If he was seeking the 6-7M per year money he's worth he'd get 4-5M, can't blame him for negotiating.
