Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Mon Sep 29, 2014 12:19 pm

Markieff and Marcus Morris are close to contract extensions with the Phoenix Suns, according to sources.

Both are closing in on new four-year deals that are likely to total in the $52 million range.

If Markieff is only paid 26M over 4 years, it's a bargain!

$52 million combined I hope. If so, then good deal for the Suns. If not (i.e. if it's each getting that), then, well...

Well, I suppose they have nobody to blame but themselves for wanting to play together, but it is amusing that they are no longer two separate individuals at all. They even negotiate their contracts together and get it all quoted as one lump sum. :P

$30 mill for Markieff and $22 mill for Marcus sounds about right

The Suns have some leverage in negotiations in that neither twin will ever be willing to play on separate teams. If we're talking $6.5 million/year, then it's a great deal for each of them and a solid deal for the Suns. If we're talking $13 million/year, then the Morris twins are hypnotists and the Suns are being mind-controlled.

I don't think Marcus is worth more than 2-3 million a year. Markeiff is much better.

I think the main reason they got that much is that the Suns have so much cap space. I am a fan and watched every game last season and I don't think Markieff is worth 8 million a season. I would have given him 6.5 and Marcus 2.5 a season. Markieff shows up more when the pressure is on and he is needed. Marcus is not a game changer at all.

How so? I'm pretty sure Marcus realizes when Markieff is playing more minutes and putting up better numbers that they are not 100% equals at this point. It would actually be awkward if MARCUS got the bigger contract but that would never happen.

And I doubt it could be any more awkward than the draft when Marcus thought he'd be selected first and cried when Markieff did... only to get selected with the very next pick.

I think they'll just be happy that they're both millionaires and can play on the same team for a long time to come

Keep in mind, virtually all long term contract negotiations going forward will involve the salary cap increase factor. The $8m is worth around $6m when the cap goes up. It's a good idea to lock guys in now before they hit the open market because you never know what kind of crazy offers desperate teams would throw out.

I wonder if there's a no-trade clause, or a package trade clause

The FOE clause. A trade kicker applies if one brother is traded without the other.

Should the brothers stay together for more than two years, whether with one team or another, the team is eligible for the Morris Rule, which allows the team to open an extra roster spot as the brothers are now counted as one player.
