Lance Stephenson Has Clashed With Hornets' Teammates

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Sun Dec 21, 2014 4:07 pm

Lance Stephenson has clashed with teammates during his early time with the Charlotte Hornets.

Steve Clifford has placed responsibility for Stephenson's adjustment on the Hornets' veterans.

The Hornets have sought out trades for Stephenson, but haven't found an opportunity to their liking. The Hornets want value still in return for Stephenson and aren't merely trying to dump his contract.

The apostrophe in the title angers me.

You give the guy a long-term contract, tell him he's your future, then try to dump him 25 games into the season.

Why?

Not a possessive or a contraction. Hornets is being used as an adjective.

Hornets is possessive in this instance. Hornets is the team name (not Hornet). So the apostrophe is in the correct place.

But it's not possessive? The Hornets (as a team) don't have teammates. Lance Stephenson does. These are Lance Stephenson's teammates. Not the Hornets' teammates.

Just replace Hornets with new. Lance Stephenson has clashed with new teammates. Not new's teammates. Or Charlotte. Lance Stephenson has not clashed with Charlotte's teammates; unless there's a girl named Charlotte out there who is in a team, members of which have clashed with Lance.

Now if instead of teammates it was players, the apostrophe would be needed.

Correct it should read Hornets not Hornets' in this context.

I wouldn't call a 3 year deal with a team option on the 3rd a "long-term contract" but maybe that's just me.
