Adidas Won't Renew Apparel Deal With NBA

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Mon Mar 16, 2015 4:24 pm

Adidas has dropped its bid to extend their deal to supply uniforms to the NBA, which means 2017 will be their final season.

Adidas is reconsidering its basketball plans and will instead focusing on developing new products, endorsing more amateur teams and doubling its roster of NBA players.

Adidas signed an 11-year deal in 2006 worth $400 million.

Chris Grancio, Adidas' global basketball general manager, said the deal hasn't been as lucrative as hoped.

Grancio said he had "no idea" about whether Nike or Under Armour have bid on the deal. He said Adidas' decision was made independent of the bids of other parties.

Must have been those ugly short-sleeve jerseys that really dipped their expectations. Not many support from fans/public...

This is a great opportunity for Wal-Mart to swoop in and get more then a foot in the door in this market.

Adidas was trying to do too much anyway. Seems like they tried to focus on a younger demo...but the league never had a problem before moving gear. Nike was the long time supplier of unis and they stayed in what ball gear was supposed to be. Adidas thought those sleeve jerseys would move on the street but they didn't.

The sleeve'd jerseys are not an Adidas idea, it's an NBA-pushed idea. And it will continue to be pushed for the simple fact that you can't sell advertising space on sleeves if the jerseys don't have sleeves. Ads are coming, and they are the main reason the sleeves will be seen more and more during games.

why would anyone want to pay for this? its not good advertizing. no one cares who makes the uniforms unless they screw them up. like what nike has done to the college and NFL uniforms. its a negative. lets hope Nike doesnt get these bc they will screw w/ every thing they can

i think the sleeved jerseys were made for fans quite frankly. it's a lot less revealing to wear t-shirts than cut off tank tops. especially for old dudes and fat dudes.

I can totally see one of the Chinese brands getting the contract (Li-Ning, Anta, Peak, etc). Would be a win-win for the league.

Really no incentive for Nike to go for it since there doesn't appear to be much money to be made and since they get the advertising for "free" with their players wearing their shoes.
