NBA Not Ready To Change Structure For Playoffs, Lottery After Discussions

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Fri Apr 17, 2015 5:51 pm

The NBA discussed potential changes to the current structure for the playoffs and lottery, but they've decided to leave the status quo in place for now.

Adam Silver says one idea that was discussed by owners was a play-in tournament.

Some have called for the NBA to switch to a top-16 format.

On lottery reform, owners again concluded "we are not ready for a change," Silver said.

In the last 15 years only once -- the 2008-09 season -- has the East claimed the better win percentage than the Western conference.

The playoffs are fine... Sorry Doc!

The lottery needs work...
OKC is in the lottery after winning 55% of their games in the tougher West.
The Nets are not in the lottery after winning 46% of their games in the East.

The reason the conferences wont balance is because the lottery is linked to a teams playoff berth. Crappy teams in the East get excluded from the lottery every year because they make the playoffs. I like the conference playoff system the way it is (although the divisions are unnecessary.) But the NBA needs to separate playoff berth and lottery seeding. There is no reason the two should be linked. Just put the bottom 10 or 12 teams in the league into the lottery, regardless of playoff berth, and the conferences will begin to balance. Better yet, pick an odd number like 9 or 11 and the weaker conference gets guaranteed an extra pick in the lottery.

The 80's... Bird's Celtics, Piston Bad Boys, Jordan's Bulls (although he didn't really start winning championships until the 90s), Ewing's Knicks, Domnique's Hawks, the Cavs, Doc J and Sir Charles' Sixers...

Even going back just a few years ago before the Heat built their "Big 3", you had the Heat, Cavs, Pistons, Wizards, Celtics, Magic, even D-Rose's Bulls emerging and gave the Celtics a scare one year.
