Grizzlies Explore Greg Oden

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Sat May 30, 2015 4:44 pm

The Memphis Grizzlies have explored center Greg Oden, expressing interest in the recent past with a workout in the spring and potentially bringing in the former No. 1 overall NBA pick to a free-agent camp in June, league sources told RealGM.

Oden, the first pick to the Portland Trail Blazers in 2007, played with the Miami Heat last season. He scored 67 points and grabbed 54 rebounds in 23 games.

The Grizzlies’ current level of interest in Oden remains unclear, but the franchise is believed to be having a free-agent mini-camp in the upcoming weeks -- like many organizations around the NBA. Oden is undecided in his possible participation there.

Oden's close friend and former teammate, Mike Conley, spoke late this season about the possibility of Oden’s comeback. Surely, Oden’s comfort level with the Grizzlies rises with Conley’s stature on the team.

In averaging 15.7 points and 9.6 rebounds, Oden led Ohio State to the NCAA championship game in 2007 and had the base of a foundational player at the NBA level. Nevertheless, knee injuries provided constant setbacks.

Oden, 27, has played two NBA seasons for Portland and one for Miami.

Sad story, but looks like he has made 24 million in career earnings.

The last pick in the draft Thomas made just 2.1 million in his 3 year tenure in Sacramento.

I don't think it's a terrible idea for any team to be looking at Oden. He's a 7ft shot blocker who can help you defensively which is a fairly rare commodity in the NBA these days.

Now with that being said, don't get carried away with what I am saying. At this point in his career he is a bench warmer at best and I certainly hope Oden believes he is to. He is only going to play 5-10 minutes MAX, but unfortunately he will always be under the radar during those minutes as the first round bust who is trying to make something of himself.

Personally, I hope he can sustain a position in the league for a couple years and contribute as I've mentioned. It must be a horrible feeling knowing you put your whole adelescene into something, achieving your dream and then have it taken away from you.

You have to change the headline, RealGM. It just sounds so dirty.
Draft Nate Wolters - FAILED
Keep Nate Wolters - FAILED

The real decision the Jazz FO is making is between Continuity, Cap Flexibility, and Cash Considerations.

can we agree on this guy being a lost cause? too much obsession with former lotto picks who are 7 footers.

As a man who had to turn down my track & field scholarship cause I blew out my knee, I feel for guys with bad knees. Atleast for Oden he got to experience the NBA for a short while. If Oden can even stay 70% healthy and contribute 15-23 minutes a game I'm sure he would be Ecstatic about that

Interesting... Does this possibly mean the Grizzlies are concerned Gasol might leave?

Not really. I don't think they expect to replace Gasol's production with Oden.

It's probably concern that Gasol's backup, Kuofos, is leaving - which I don't blame him. He should be a starter in this league, but he's stuck behind an All NBA first teamer here.
