If the San Antonio Spurs are able to sign LaMarcus Aldridge, they will have to find a trade involving Tiago Splitter to open up cap room.
But the Spurs actually rejected trade offers for Splitter on draft night, which raises speculation he could be kept.

Hmm I don't think Duncan's going to play for peanuts. He did lose big money in that scandal or whatever. Kind of interested how the Spurs reload.

why trade away Splitter if you have no idea how long Duncan will be playing?

all these years Spurs been underpaying him so they can stay under the luxury tax zone
paying him veteran minimum is kind of insult
Duncan deserves to get paid 10 million a year

I think Duncan will accept half of the MLE, about 3.5 mil, the other half could go to Ginobili.

It just means they're not so sure about getting Aldridge. When he commits, they'll trade Splitter. I don't think they're gonna have a hard time finding a market for him.

You guys can ramble about how Duncan deserves more (certainly) and how he might need money because of the recent legal situation, but both concerns are why you're not Tim Duncan. He's a classy legend and he's not the type of dude to think like that, you'd better believe that despite both those (admittedly justifiable) concerns there's a lot of talk about him taking less so they can bring in Aldridge.
Sorry, that's just the difference between Tim Duncan and basically 90% of the other superstars (ala Kobe). That's how his mind works.
Either the Spurs are temporarily rejecting trade interest because they don't want to launch this until they're 100% sure Aldridge is coming in (and they are still supposedly the #1 destination despite all this Lakers talk to excite their vast and simple fanbase)
orrrr, they somehow have another idea for clearing space (Diaw? I don't know) and realize that Aldridge always insists on a strong defensive center alongside him and while Timmy serves that purpose potentially he won't be there forever and Splitter/Aldridge could work out if Tiago can stay healthy.

TD said on the local news, losing $25 mil is not going to make any life changes for him, he has made over $200 mil just from ball. Word is that they will give TD a 2 year contract worth $6-7 a year and they will give Manu the lower exemption, I think its $2.8 mil a year for two years.
