NBA Launching Study Into Wearable Technology

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Thu Sep 17, 2015 9:24 pm

The NBA is investing in the study of wearable GPS devices with the probable end goal of having players wear them during games.

The league is funding a study, at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, of products from two leading device-makers: Catapult and STATSports.

Most teams already use the technology during practices.

Weighing less than an ounce, these devices are worn underneath a player’s jersey. They track basic movement data, including distance traveled and running speed, but the real value comes from the health- and fatigue-related information they produce.

Several GMs and other team higher-ups have privately pushed for in-game use, but they understand the league has to collectively bargain that kind of step with the players’ union.

There is a concern on the part of the players' union on how teams uses the data and who gets to see it.

There's an issue here with health information, but I can't see why the player would oppose this.

League could start using it to track all their whereabouts and try to Clean up the nba image again by making sure none of them step foot inside a bar or strip club every again. The Nba...where control happens.

Not sure if you're being sarcastic, but the device will be fitted on Jerseys. They will not wear it in off time.

I can see these going for triple the price of regular jerseys in the NBA store...

I like it for all the bb-nerd data it could provide. Miles run, precise shot distance, etc. For that matter they should put a GPS device in the ball to track ball movement... I already told you I'm a nerd!

This may lead to miniature cameras on jerseys, providing a player's perspective view of the game. Some soccer teams are already experimenting with this technology. I know that's not what they're implying here, but it would be awesome to one day see the look on a player's face as they get crossed over by Steph Curry or Kyrie. Or dunked on by Blake.

It'll start with the jerseys but soon it will start racially profiling and forcing certain players to embed it in them to track whereabouts. Probably will be a big topic at the next CBA negotiations and understandably so

As long as it is safe and doesn't interfere with the play on the court, rock and ruin. This will be great stuff for the fan community, and for the coaching staffs around the league.

EDIT: Havlicek wore a pedometer for at least one game during his career and it didn't seem to bother him. I can't imagine a one-ounce GPS tag would be a major problem for these guys.
