What is Houston's motivation to do this?

a 2nd ball handling not named Lawson
can't afford to have two players on the floor that play lazy defense

Josh smith was very good last year with Houston

Shocked when he left, shocked that the clips couldn't use him (not really, clips are pathetic), now Houston gets him back for free basically

Great move for Houston
I guess lance Stephenson is moved next?
USA Celtics in full effect. Amazing chemistry building experience right there for the main core of the team

Proceeds to finish 7th and shames the entire nation!

Maybe Morey's thinking having Josh Smith is better than having nothing? :dontknow:

I think they'll likely trade Jones at the deadline given that he is probably going to get a 4 year, $60 million offer in the off-season. Im guessing they want to keep Montie and get a 1st round pick for Jones.

are you talking about terrence jones? there is no way he's gettin 60m/4 year deal.
+ you cant get 1st round pick for jones expiring. not even late first round.

its doubtful whether terrence jones deserves starting spot or not. i think he cant be starter for most of the teams. solid backup though.

Seems Houston is already set at the 4 with Capela / Jones and Motiejunas when he comes back.

Josh Smith takes away minutes from those younger, developing assets

Huge pick up for the Rockets. Smith is worth at least 1 more play-off W for the Rockets. Every year it seems like a few 'low impact vets' make the difference in play-off games.

lol morey working his magic again!

Ty - Harden - Ariza - Smith - Howard - near all star starting five
Fact is that momentum in games is a real thing, while not tangible itself, you can tangibly see the effect it has when teams are on runs and how it can dramatically effect the outcome of games when you can generate any momentum.

This is huge for the Rockets. Smith is a big upgrade defensively over Jones, Capela or DMO. Capela can go back to playing back up center and Smith slides in back to his old spot at back up 4. The head band brothers have been reuinted (Terry, Brewer, Smith).

Fun fact. Josh Smith had a career high 3pt attempts last year with the Rockets at 3.5/game and at 33%.

Josh Smith is an el cheapo rotation-caliber player who costs Houston nothing (the Clippers are even paying Smith's salary!) acquired in anticipation of further trades, including and especially a Dwight Howard trade. Daryl Morey knows Howard will become a free agent this summer, and that Howard will expect a massive new contract. Morey knows what a godawful investment that will be, so he is going to auction Howard off to the highest bidder between now and the trade deadline. Smith is in the mix to replace some of Howard's minutes. Morey would still like to put a competitive team on the floor even after trading away Howard.

What is Morey looking to get back for Howard? Preferably an All-Star-caliber big, most likely someone younger and cheaper. My guess is either Kevin Love or Joakim Noah (who is out for the year, but acquiring him means Houston has his Larry Bird Rights, a huge advantage in free agency), possibly Hassan Whiteside. Note that the Smith trade and the David Blatt firing happened on the same day, which may not be a coincidence. If Houston can't get back a player along these lines, look for them to shoot for players on rookie salary contracts and/or draft picks.

Houston is presumably also shopping Corey Brewer, Ty Lawson, and Terrence Jones. Lawson's primary value is his expiring contract, however.

I expect Dwight Howard to wind up in either Boston or Miami over the next four weeks :)
