76ers Claim Sonny Weems, Release Christian Wood

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Mon Mar 7, 2016 11:28 pm

The Philadelphia 76ers have claimed guard-forward Sonny Weems off of waivers.

Weems has appeared in 176 career games in four NBA seasons and has posted averages of seven points and two rebounds in 19 minutes per game. He was originally selected by the Chicago Bulls with the 39th overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft after two seasons at the University of Arkansas.

Weems played overseas from 2011-2015, before returning the NBA this season with Phoenix where he appeared in 36 games and averaged three points in 12 minutes per game.

In a related move, the team has released Christian Wood.

Well, the real story is the Sixers got to the salary floor with the transaction, saving 2 million dollars in the process. Weems contract is for 2.6 million, which counts against the Sixers cap numbers, but the Sixers will only have to pay him about $600,000 for the rest of the year. That 2 million difference means that the current players on the roster will not get approximately $200,000 a piece to reach the cap floor at the end of the year.

This just shows how much of a sleeze Sam Hinkie and the owner is. This screwing over your own players will end up hurting the team in free agency (like anyone would sign with them) by not being able to attract them but also for guys like Okafor and Noel not resigning with the team when their rookie contracts are up. Apparently the players association made complaints on how the team handled in season trades and waiver claims last year instead of paying the players on the roster the money to make it to the salary floor.

Really, that's 'sleazy'? The players were never promised that money, and it certainly wasn't part of their contracts or anything. They would have been getting it on a technicality, so it's more like the team took away what would've been a weird and unexpected bonus. A bonus that came right from the teams' coffers, and one that no other team in the league has.

Also, basically every other team in league history has done this when given the chance. The Blazers just did it in a much worse way--they traded for an expensive and totally useless player ($19m) with multiple years on a contract, and waived him right away--and I'm guessing you've never called Neil Olshey a sleaze.

Why would Neil Olshey be a sleaze? He only lost one superstar and still has one around, with a developing major player next to him. Sam Hinkie though, what a **** and horrible GM, amirite?

Your post is so idiotic and misguided I don't know where to start.
