Deron Williams Intends to Decline 2016-17 Player Option, Become Free Agent

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Fri Apr 29, 2016 5:30 pm

Deron Williams intends to decline the second-year player option on his contract with the Dallas Mavericks and become an unrestricted free agent this summer. The option was worth approximately $5.6 million.

Williams agreed to a buyout of the final two seasons of his contract with the Brooklyn Nets last July and signed with the Mavericks, averaging 14.1 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.9 rebounds per game this season. He turns 32 this offseason.

Good decision, he's gonna make more than that in the open market.

5.8 rebounds and 2.9 rebounds per game this season?

Do they split his rebounds per half?

With the cap going up I see him making no less than 9 million next season. Like you said, someone will view him as a vital piece to either making the playoffs or even a championship run.

5.8 assists... and the unmentioned 41% shooting.

William's success was directly tied to Jerry Sloan's coaching and system. He has proven that he isn't good enough to succeed anywhere on talent alone. But you get him together with a good coach and success will follow. Carlisle is a good coach and Williams looked better this year but GM's need to make sure their coach and system will be a fit with Williams or a bad contract will follow.

Nah

Deron Williams just doesn't care. He questioned whether he even wanted to play in the NBA a few years ago.

Good one Deron, getting plenty of cash from Brooklyn still and it would have made our squad stronger by not opting out... thanks :banghead:

^^That's lies. He'd been hurt and clearly he's never regaining that 20-10 form. He's never said anything about retiring - or leaving the NBA

what's a 32 year old 15-5 point guard with a questionable attitude and lack of defense worth on the open market?

Somewhere around $9-10 Million dollars; sadly. Ever since he left the Jazz this man hasn't been the same, guess the NY spotlight got to him and he wanted to do is come in and just do his job.

D-Will was outplayed by Jarrett Jack last year, and JJ Barea this year. he's a god damn dog of a player

The Kings will overpay him to play below average PG for them. Watch.

Deron's problem is not age, it's being healthy. His body has piled up so many problems that it has actually been hindering his performance in some cases. As Deron showed this year, whenever he started playing amazing, like a top 8-5 PG, not too long after, his body wouldn't hold up for long and he'd inevitably get injured. That being said, if he is not able to solve his health issues within maybe the next season, or the season after that, his age is definitely going to be an issue.

That was because he was often injured and playing poorly for a terrible team.

Well, Jarrett Jack didn't outplay him this year. And JJ Barea is a beast in a tiny package; if he was 6' 4" he would tear up the league. (only half kidding) Williams clearly isn't an all-star anymore but there are 30 teams in the league. With the right coach and system Williams is capable of being in the bottom half of the league as a starting PG or possibly a top 10 backup PG. But look, people were saying Tony Parker was done before this season began. Right team; right coach; right system.
