Rockets, Knicks, Grizzlies Interested In Eric Gordon

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Thu Jun 30, 2016 4:38 am

The Houston Rockets, Memphis Grizzlies and New York Knicks are interested in pursuing Eric Gordon in free agency.

The Pelicans also have interest in re-signing Gordon, who has had injury issues over the past few seasons.

Gordon is coming off a four-year, $58 million deal signed in 2012.

I feel sorry for this guy - after Pelicans drafted Anthony Davis, they offered EG a 5 year 82M max extension and he declined and pursued a max offer sheet from the suns for less money 4 years 58M while publicly pleading the pelicans not to match which they did. He wanted out of NO since he was included in the CP3 trade. His poor judgement basically caused 24M in guarnteed dollars had he originally signed with NO. Now I don't see him getting a deal that pays him anywhere close to that because of his recent injury issues. He's likely a mid-level player on a short term deal maybe approx 2 years 14M even with the cap going up.

If the Knicks end up signing him there is a good chance at some point in the season they will be without more than half of their starting lineup. Rose is injury prone, Noah is injury prone, Gordon is injury prone.... what's the plan if all 3 go down for a long stretch of time?

I wouldn't feel sorry for a guy that under-performed and was grossly overpaid on a $58 million contract. And then by the biggest strokes of luck, he's re-entering the market at a time when he might be able to secure a similar 4 year deal. He's probably not going to lose that much of the contract he turned down (maybe $10 million) and he's still going to make well over $100 million in career earnings.

It sounds like you only feel sorry for him because he passed on his only chance at a max contract. I cant feel bad for someone not getting overpaid as he clearly hasnt even deserved his current salary what with being injury prone and a bad fit as a one dimentional set shooter with little else to his game besides a decent post & midrange game for a guard.

With that said, it makes little sense for the Rockets, unless he's a bench role player or the Knicks who cant afford heavily injury prone players and need a deserving starting SG. The Knicks cant afford another risky decision after the Rose one-year gamble.

Gordon is definitely just a big gamble as he is limited in skillset and likely averages around 40 games played if youre lucky. Evans has been injury prone in large part due heavy loads on weak or depleted teams. Bledsoe is a slight risk what with having his meniscus removed. Each player should still be able to play 60 + games in a season, moreso if on a better load balanced team and as starters. I wouldnt expect for anything more than a 20-ish minute bench role out of Gordon.

He's not even a good player , he's done nothing in the NBA aside from one meaningless season on the Clippers. Even if he stayed healthy I think he would be a huge disappointment. He's been overrated since he entered the league , injuries aside.
"We're like Tim Duncan and David Robinson," Villanueva said, following the team's morning shootaround at the America West Arena. "But a younger version. I really feel that."
