Deyonta Davis, Grizzlies Agrees To Record Contract For 2nd Rounder

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Sun Jul 10, 2016 7:33 pm

Deyonta Davis has agreed upon a fully guaranteed three-year, $4 million deal with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Davis' deal is the richest ever for a second round pick. The deal allows Memphis to retain his Bird rights and eliminate the Arena provision, leaving him with no restrictions on how much he can earn on a second deal.

Davis’ deal exceeds the guaranteed slotted salary of the 16th pick in the draft.

Davis was the 31st overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft.

he was the last guy in the green room to be taken in this year's draft, 2nd round 31st pick...The agent basically tried to save face, and NBA as well i think for inviting him to the green room and just to see him fell out of the 1st round.

Glad to see the guy get a guaranteed deal after falling a good 15-20 spots from where he was projected. Hopefully, this helps him forget about what most likely seemed to be a nightmare on draft day.

This seems like a total fluff piece planted by the player's agent.

"Davis’ deal exceeds the guaranteed slotted salary of the 16th pick in the draft."

What does that even mean? As reported by our very own RealGM, the 16th pick is slotted for $1,573,500 on the NBA rookie scale, and for $4.93M over the first 3 years.
Davis's deal is being reported as $4M over 3 years. That's less than $4.93M.
Why would any of us care about Davis's deal vs. the 16th pick's deal? The answer is that we wouldn't.
Shams Charania shouldn't care. He's generally a good journalist.
But Davis's agent would care if he wants to get props with his clients.

In other words, the motivation behind this news release smells funny.

That's an interesting take. I find it interesting for a 2d rounder to get a 3 year guarantee.

But I also think Davis will be the steal of the draft. I could have seen him going as high as 12-15. He may not be an "impact" player immediately, but I suspect he''ll be a pretty strong rotation player quickly.

That #16 pick only has 2 years guaranteed though.

Why compare with the #16 pick and not the #12 pick which also has less guaranteed money than Davis's reported deal, I have no idea.

I agree, it was surprising that Davis fell so far and it's nice for him to get a guaranteed deal. (Although other 2nd round picks might try to kill it initially and then get a big deal afterward.) The odd thing is the reporting of the details, and the comparison to the 16th pick.
My summary:
Bad for Davis to fall so far;
Good for Davis to get a second-best option;
:naaa: to Davis's people for pretending as if the second-best option is better than the first-best.
Now: get on with your life, young man, and good luck to you. :beer:
