Mavs Expected To Pursue DeMarcus Cousins In 2018

The Dallas Mavericks are "expected to go hard after" DeMarcus Cousins during his 2018 free agency.
Cousins signed a four-year, $62 million contract extension in 2013 with the Sacramento Kings.
Cousins has been offered the opportunity to be traded by the Kings but he's continued to try to make the situation work.
The Mavericks recently signed Jaleel Cousins, who is DeMarcus' younger brother and he is expected to join the Texas Legends.
Dallas signed Harrison Barnes in the 2016 offseason one year after DeAndre Jordan ultimately decided to back out of his verbal agreement to re-sign with the Clippers.

Since when have the Kings been open to trading Cousins? It's not referenced anywhere in the twitter post linked to the "news story" that you're trying to create here. If anything, the Kings have been turning down countless offers for Cousins, and rejecting the efforts of George Karl to trade him (and ultimately firing Karl for not working well with Cousins).
RealGM is taking a lot of liberties with reality here...

This is the only useful mention from the whole bit. Every team with ambitions will go after Cousins when he is a free agent. The Mavs have done well by signing his brother to earn some good graces with the family, but that sort of move doesn't always work out.
-ps- RealGM, if you're looking for more creative writers that can create basketball stories that are more realistic, feel free to make me an offer.

Mavs pursue every free agent every year and always get turned down unless they are way overpaying to get that player(ex.Chandler Parsons,Wes Matthews, Harrison Barnes). There is no reason to think that Cousins has any desire to play in Dallas and will get numerous offers from better teams. Mavs will go after Curry, Westbrook, Harden, Durant, Lebron, etc,etc etc. without success. Non story. You can replace any big name free agent in place of Cousins.

George Karl attempting to trade him does not mean the Kings wanted to trade him.

So, I mean, good for Dallas. It would be an interesting addition. Not really sure what DMC might see in Dallas that he couldn't find in a number of other locations from the POV of trying to win basketball games, though. He'd be going to a team that doesn't really have much to offer in terms of upside or roster talent in that season or going forward, and there will be other teams with cap space. Uphill battle for the Mavs there. Best of luck to 'em, but I mean, this feels like another pipe dream.

Dallas has been a sought after destination for top flight free agents like Harrison Barnes and Matthews just to name a couple.

Yes, thanks for the confirmation of Karl trying to move Cousins - and not the Kings as an organization. There was even some discussion that the Kings were going to try to get out of paying Karl his remaining guaranteed contract after they fired him, as they explicitly stated in negotiations with Karl before he was hired that he would have to coach the team he is given (as in no roster control).
Vivek wants Cousins on the Kings for life.
Vlade might eventually be able to persuade him to get value for Cousins while they can.

lol Dallas only got both because they gave them max deals at the beginning of free agency went other teams were chasing the top free agents in each class. Both contracts look like overpays. Barnes is young but many have doubts he will emerge into an all star talent. Matthews is injury-prone and a role player at best. Lakers are a more popular free agent destination than Dallas even when they are awful. And the lakers situation is a better one going forward with all the cap space and young players on rookie deals they have going forward.

You still have to try. Also, these things come down to 50-50 decisions. McGrady himself said that he had extended talks with Shaq in 2004, and the three (with Dirk) almost came together in Dallas. The same thing (almost happened) with Paul and Dwight. They talked about coming to the Mavs in... I believe 2010, or 2012? Neither happened, but we know these straight from the horse's mouth. These are very close decisions and just becuse the Mavs struck out a couple of times, it doesn't mean they should keep trying, especially when they have no superstar on the roster anymore.
When Dirk was still in his prime, you could try a different road, and keep retooling around him until you got it right, which they did. Right now it's not about that anymore, but fielding a competitive team for him. Everyone knows they will not be contenders, including Dirk, Cuban and Carlisle, but that's still how they roll. I don't personally like it, but I understand it. I just hope we can get some solid talent through the draft in the next couple of years.

CP3 and Dwight did not almost go to Dallas. Dallas didn't have nearly enough to trade for them and they weren't both free agents at the same time ( pretty sure CP3 re-signed with LAC before he was even a ufa) so how could it have been close to happening?

Of course they will...and DMC will sign elsewhere when it's all said and done. DMC is a smart dude and anybody looking at the Mavs can tell they're in for a overhaul, rebuild, reset or whatever you want to call it.They don't even have a core in place yet, and Cuban keeping the Mavs in neutral for the last days of Dirk has hurt their drafting. DMC being the vet he his will go to the team most ready to win plain and simple.

They supposedly already agreed on Dallas as a destination, then it fell apart. I guess you could argue on the "almost" part, but the point is, they wouldn't have mind playing in Dallas. It mostly comes down to market, players, coach and owner, all four of which we were decent to good to great at the time. It didn't happen, but when it comes to a huge free agent, there is only one winner, and 29 losing teams.

When Dallas broke up the 2011 title team - there goal reportedly was to free up enough cap space to keep dirk while signing Dwight and bringing D-Will, a dallas native back home so they could have the big 3D in Dallas like how Miami assembled the heat and dominated the east. But Dwight Howard messed everything up opting into his contract because he made some back room deal with the magic ceo Alex Martins where if the magic didn't get out of the first round, than magic would trade him to Brooklyn. Deron Williams when he was still with Utah reportedly always planned on going to mavs when he became a ufa so jazz traded him to nets before he became one. Than Jay-Z through different channels was recruiting/brainwashing dwight to force his way to the nets before their brooklyn move. If Dwight played his cool both he and Dwill could have landed on the mavs as ufas when they were healthy and in their prime. I don't think Mark Cuban ever imagined his team and the mavs organization would free fall so much after breaking up that 2011 title team - it's drawn comparisons to how he passed on resigning Steve Nash to a muli-year deal at what at the time was a reasonable salary he was seeking (he was not a max player or requesting a max deal) but cuban thought he wouldn't age well and than steve went on to win back to back mvps with the phoenix suns.

Mavs always wanted Deron Williams - CP3 was never their top choice - people forget that D-will was an elite pg before all his injuries and issues arose in Brooklyn. This dude carried pretty talent dry utah teams to the western conference finals on more than one occasion. There were reports however when the league owned the hornets that - the magic like the lakers and clippers made an offer for cp3 to try and unite him with dwight but clearly it was not enough to reach advanced talks like the lakers vetoed deal or the modified clippers deal that included a lottery pick (became austin rivers) over eric bledsoe (agent said that bledsoe wouldn't sign an extension and would play his qualifying offer and leave as ufa if he landed in NO).

I think Cousins gets dealt next summer when the cap also rises and any one of the 29 teams can absorb his deal without sending salary back so kings will only have to take back assets they want like picks and young players. Expect Kings to offer Cousins a max 3 year extension with a raise on his 17-18 salary similar to what the thunder did with Westbrook and if he rejects that than - the highest bidder go the spoils. I think Cousins to Boston is inevitable - would not be surprised if kings ask for all the brooklyn picks and another asset like Marcus Smart.
