Bucks To Own D-League Team In Oshkosh For 17-18 Season

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Wed Feb 8, 2017 12:52 am

The Milwaukee Bucks will own and operate an NBA Development League franchise in Oshkosh beginning for the 2017-’18 season.

A 3,500-seat arena is being built in Oshkosh and is expected to be ready in time for next season.

The Bucks also considered bids from Sheboygan and Racine.

Milwaukee joins a trend of NBA franchises owning affiliate D-League clubs. The Bucks will become the 20th NBA team to own and operate an affiliate, and the Oshkosh team will be the 25th D-League entry

Which teams don't have their own DLeague team yet?

Once all teams have their own team, then will this be more like a minor league or NFL practice squad type, where players can still sign with other teams?

NBA teams with future affiliation: Atlanta Hawks (with Erie BayHawks by parent club ownership in 2017) and Minnesota Timberwolves (with the Iowa Energy by parent club ownership in 2017)

NBA teams without an exclusive affiliate: Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles Clippers, Milwaukee Bucks, New Orleans Pelicans, Portland Trail Blazers, and Washington Wizards.

And yes, it'll eventually be closer to Baseball's minor league where players have two-way contracts that pay them differently depending whether they're called up and don't eat into roster spots while under contract at the d-league level. So starting next year rosters will have 15 players plus 2 two-way contracts. Hopefully it'll grow once every team has a dleague affiliate, although NO and Denver will probably be typically cheap until forced to.
