Magic Johnson Turned Down Job Offers From Warriors, Pistons, Knicks

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Wed Sep 13, 2017 3:56 pm

Magic Johnson received several job offers to work for a team before taking the Los Angeles Lakers' job in 2017.

“I turned down three jobs. My good friends Peter [Guber] and Joe [Lacob], they bought the Golden State Warriors. They came to me, ‘I want you to be an owner, a partner with us.’ I said ‘No, I’m a Laker.’ My friend bought the Detroit Pistons, Tom Gores, and a Michigan State Guy. ‘Come on home It’d be a great story.’ ‘I can’t, I’m a Laker.’ I could’ve owned other teams,” Johnson said.

Johnson is also believed to have turned down multiple opportunities to run the New York Knicks.

glad you didn't come to the warriors. Jacob is enough. Don't need people in the front office bigger than the team.

The Pistons meeting went something like this.

Pistons: We would like you to work for the Pistons, Magic.

Magic: One incurable disease is enough thank you.

Magic didn't want to work for Dolan. What a shock.

dolan wanted a big name that doesn't necessarily know anything about building a winner. what a shock
the donald, always unpopular, did worse in EVERY state in 2020. and by a greater margin in red states! 50 independently-run elections, none of them rigged

No surprise there

Could be wrong. And I'm willing to be held morbidly responsible

Asking you to invest your money...quite the opposite of being offered a job/having an organization invest money in YOU.

I believe less of what Magic says, the more he name drops. Its cost us money last time...stop it

Magic Johnson also turned down job offers from the Bush League, darts conglomerate and National Water Polo Association.

Unnecessary hate.

What's the point of talking about this? Your the GM of the Lakers, did you want a cookie or a pat on the back or something?

Thank god you didn't get the Dubs GM or we probably wouldn't have gotten 2 championships in 3 years and 3 straight finals appearances.

Phil Jackson was still the president of the Knicks when Magic Johnson was hired to run the Lakers. I don't understand why the Knicks are mentioned in this news story at all, it's just a sentence on the bottom of an article that speculates he turned down an offer. Looks like realgm follows the ESPN tradition of mentioning the Knicks for no reason for clicks.
