Wolves Shopped Cole Aldrich In Trade Talks

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Mon Oct 9, 2017 1:31 pm

The Minnesota Timberwolves shopped Cole Aldrich and a second round in trade talks in search of veteran help.

The Wolves have a surplus of bigs on their roster.

Aldrich signed a three-year, $22 million deal with the Wolves in the 2016 offseason.

Wow, that would have shaken the very foundation of the Western Conference!

This is not news. If they deemed him untradeable... that would be news!

That looked like a value contract at the time. Aldrich was coming off a season where he beasted, in the minutes he played

He can play, and his contract was actually considered a hometown discount in the massive spending of 2016 free agency. However, he will never get much court time in Minnesota for three reasons. Thibs plays a very short bench, Towns and Dieng have played 82 games the last two years, plus they added Taj.

Aldrich was loved in a back up role in LAC the year before, because he does what you want from a back up on today's game. He can defend a little, protect the rim a little, and do a bit of pick and roll. He is not the typical center that is going out fashion, who can't protect the rim, and is only a low post scorer.

Aldrich's contract may actually turn out to be an advantage. He's $7.3 this year, but next year only has $6.95 mil team option, with only $2 mil guaranteed. MIN has aligned most of it's new players on two year deals, and since they are under the lux, they may be willing to use the deal to help another team get more 2017 cap space, a particularly valuable free agency with fewer buyers.

The Wolves can do a deal up to $12.3 mil, and for two years. Maybe we'll see a trade for Shumpert, or Jared Dudley.

He was pretty good with the knicks before as well when he got chances. Honestly if I were the Nets I would roll the dice on him. He played like an All Star with the Clippers in the minutes he played. Basically they would just be taking on his contract and get a pick for the trouble but maybe he got back to that kind of form.

The Nets already have Mozgov, Allen and Zeller at Center plus Booker who will surely slide over for minutes this season. None of them are particularly good but they’re still all as good or better than Aldrich so why bother adding all the money to the payroll for a guy who won’t play?

It would be news if they DIDN'T shop him. He barely played last year, and wasn't impressive when he did.

They aren't better if he returns to his form from 2 years ago and he's still under 30, it could happen under a different coach like they have. He he played like that he's one of the best centers in the NBA 2 years ago. Seriously 22.0 player efficiency Rating and one of the best defensive ratings in the entire NBA, #4 best defensive rpm. Look at his per 36's, they were crazy. He certainly has more potential than any of those bums given that year alone. When you are in their position go for it. We know what Zeller, Booker or Mozgov are.

Seems like there's a surplus of big men in the league. Who even needs a center?
