Report: 76ers Decline 18-19 Option On Jahlil Okafor

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Tue Oct 31, 2017 8:04 pm

The Philadelphia 76ers will not pick up the fourth-year option on Jahlil Okafor.

Okafor was the third overall pick in the 2015 draft.

Way to preserve the value of that high draft pick 76ers!

Who knew they were actually being conscious of Who they give $ to now? Will hitting that salary floor no longer be an issue moving forward?

I would have picked it up. It is not unforeseen that he may come in handy as a filler if Embiid cannot remain healthy in the future.

Yea maybe I am wrong but I would think if they picked up his option at the very least they could have traded him next off season for at least a 2nd rounder if they wanted the cap space. It would have been an expiring 6 million dollar deal with him being a future restricted free agent if his current team wanted to keep him. Someone would have taken him for cheap if they couldn't find a better deal.

I guess no real value right now for non shooting big men. They also got nothing for Nerlens Noel.

We had no leverage as long as Jah was getting DNP's. I think he will be a steal for whatever team gives him a chance (Chicago?) After dropping 20 lbs over the offseason his mobility improved noticeably, and his scoring ability looked more polished than ever. Granted, that's from a 3-4 game sample size...

Brooklyn could give him a chance, Chicago as stated above. It's just about the pieces they want to part with in order to acquire him.

Wow that's unbelievable! I'd think the Pacers will give them 2 2nds and if they want him Al Jefferson but they'd just take Okafor.

He needs a place who is going to give him a legit shot in the league... I know there are a lot of statistics that go against him, but he needs a legit chance to develop and showcase him abilities.

Effective post scorer, awful defender. Has matured a lot, tho, deserves another chance elsewhere.

Is he really that much worse than Kanter?

I remember when Sixers fans were asking for 2 of our Brooklyn picks for this guy. Yeah, I think I'll take Kyrie Irving for just 1 instead.

No matter what folks' opinions on his style of play are, the fact is that the Sixers have treated him like dog excrement since the beginning.

He's worked his butt off, not complained, and even went to a vegan diet in the offseason to get slimmer.

He's gotten ZERO chance with this organization. They've treated him like trash.

Once they had Embiid, Jah wasn't part of 'the process.' They treated him more like 'the abscess.'

So true. He really got royaly screwed in the transition from Hinke to Coloangelo.

Jah never had a chance in Philly. Just the way the lotery balls fell for him.

Truly a “what if” scenario, if he got drafted by any other franchise

He is your Ethan Kanter, who is still making 17mil and 18mil next year.

This guy definitely deserves a solid opportunity. An opportunity in China that is.

What i don't understand is why did Philly even draft Okafor when it was quite clear what kind of player Okafor is - no defense, can't stretch the floor, not a rim-protector. Extremely idiotically used 3rd pick. They should have traded the pick or then just drafted a player whose skillsets were going to translate better to the NBA (Porzingis and Turner if they wanted big men). Right now it looks like Philly tanked the whole season to draft a player whose game doesn't fit to the NBA and now there is no chance to get an adequate return for him (it wouldn't have been like that if they had traded the pick before the draft).

He's like Kanter, but at least Kanter is bigger and can "somehow" defend.

Unless he develops good defense, or at least be burly enough like a Zach Randolph type of guy, he'll get destroyed every now and then by bigger PF's and C's.

His weakness will be overshadowed if he gets to play with a good defensive team. But until then, he'd always be a liability on the defensive end and may be more suited in a reserve role.

Suns should check him out. I don't see why not.. If we ever needed to tank it's now.

Bledsoe for Okafor + some pick(s). Obviously a top5 pick is out of reach.
