Cavs, Hornets Have Discussed Kemba Walker Trade

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Tue Feb 6, 2018 2:15 am

The Cleveland Cavaliers and Charlotte Hornets have had at least vague discussions centered upon a trade of Kemba Walker and Nicolas Batum for Isaiah Thomas, Brooklyn's first round pick and approximately $25 million in outgoing salary.

The Hornets would likely have to take both Tristan Thompson and J.R. Smith.

The Hornets have interest in trading Walker, who will be a free agent in 2019.

I think I’d rather have Dwight Howard than Batum.

Absolutely... particularly if Thompson is going the other way. But man, Thompson and JR is a stack of bad money. This would be a foolish move for CHA.

When facing the warriors? Batum can at least defend them, Howard would be played off the court.

If it was 2010 the Cavs would literally have a god mode team at that point

C - Howard (DPOY)
PF - Love (Most Improved Player)
SF - LeBron (All NBA 1st team)
SG - Wade (All NBA 2nd team)
PG - Rose (MVP)

The Hornets have the worst front office in sports. They deserve to be disbanded if they do this.

I thought IT is the favorite of the owner?

Poor dude

Poor Hornets, trying to start all over but have to take on these bad contracts?

I’d hold onto the pick. LBJ is gonna bolt.

Why say no they are no good now.. So what they get is a low pick Thomas will fall off the books and then they have TT and JR for a couple of years which they suck in and accumulate more low picks thus enabling them to build through the draft.

They will get two low picks this year in a deep draft as well.. It will work out for them.. I dont see the problem?

Why does it matter? So what they get is a low pick Thomas will fall off the books and then they have TT and JR for a couple of years which they suck in and accumulate more low picks thus enabling them to build through the draft.

100% they should so what if they suck for a couple of years it will help them pick up more low draft picks in addition to the Brooklyn one and there one this year.. It may help them go even lower for this year...

It makes 100% sense...

I agree because there is no chance of a superstar ever signing with Charlotte (small market and MJ's shadow), so Charlotte's only chance of getting superstars is through the draft and hoping their superstar draftees will be loyal beyond the rookie contract (its possible, as Kemba Walker was loyal all the way).

I get the structure of this in principle but there are few things to thing about:

- Charlotte is getting dangerously close to the tax, I think they stay under this year, but it's literally by a few thousand bucks. They also can't realistically re-sign Isaiah without jumping over. Maybe they had no intent to anyway, but eating all that essentially dead money for the 8th-ish pick seems awfully steep. Batum is drastically overpaid, but at least he can play.

- The can't really compete in the modern NBA three headed monster of Dwight/Zeller/Thompson: $52.4M this year, $54.8M next year, $33M in 2020. Yikes.

- Trying to tank with that roster is a toxic waste fire waiting to happen. They're more or less financially locked into that core for the next two years. I would have to image tanking with a bunch of overpaid vets is infinitely harder than doing it with a gutted roster of young guys fighting for their lives in the league. On top of that, you're wasting what I think is a pretty decent strategic coach.

Yea I don't think the Cavs should do this giving up on the Brooklyn pick to me is just stupid and taking on Batum's contract is worse not worth Kemba Walker.
