Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Wed Feb 21, 2018 9:44 pm

Mark Cuban has been fined $600,000 for public statements detrimental to the NBA, it was announced today by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.

Cuban’s comments, which concerned his perspective on the team’s competitive success this season, were made during a podcast that posted on Feb. 18.

So the 76ers can lose on purpose for half a decade with no penalty, but because Cuban admits to the long-term strategy of tanking he gets fined. Okay..

lol seems pretty high relevant to the tampering fines Magic gets. Tampering is worst than tanking because it is harder for public to see - Cuban spoke the truth while Sixers committed the actions for like 4 seasons with no fines lol

I understand the fine and Cuban should too as he is a business man himslef with his comment he is hurting the NBA as a product.
Having said that its outrage that NBA is trying to seal peoples mouths.Everybody knows tanking exists and he just spoke loudly. So this is that famous democracy and free speech? just show what kind of people rule and run things...its not just NBA such false justice is around us everywhere in this 21st century and PC is killing freedom

Because they 76ers never on the record said they where going to lose on purpose. Cuban not thinking said what cant be said and thus is getting fined. To be honest he is lucky its just a fine and not the removal of this years draft pick. I can stress how stupid it was of him to on the record say that.

I imagine Cuban is contractually obligated with the NBA to not discuss such things publically, otherwise it wouldn't be legal to fine him. So he's not getting fined for his words he's getting fined for breach of contract.

No penalty?!?

Silver fired the Sixers GM and blacklisted him, then appointed the Colangelos as caretakers of the franchise. The Sixers got more than their fair share of penalized for tanking, thank you very much. I’d much rather have the 600k fine. Hell, a 100M fine is better than the Colangelos.

Also, it was three years not five.

Silver "don't play that".

Exactly! But to be fair, the Colangelos are awful.

Hypocritical until the NBA HEAVILY fines the 76ers for the whole trust the process crud.

What is the process they refer to? Someone tell me. If it involves tanking for a few years, then the nba must Fine the 76ers and take their next few years draft picks . Otherwise silver is a hypocrite

Maybe Silver should frickin' fix the problem instead.

People have been saying for years that most of the tanking goes away if you break the awarding of draft picks up into three tiers for teams missing the playoffs. In each tier, the teams have an equal shot at landing the picks in their tier. Then there is suddenly no need to try to throw as many games to move from 5th worst team in the league to absolute worst. Your odds of landing a higher pick don't improve.

Tier 1
5 worst teams get an equal 20% chance at landing the first through 5th picks in the draft.

Tier 2
The next 5 worst teams also get an equal 20% chance of landing the 6th through 10th picks in the draft.

Tier 3
The next 4 worst teams get an equal 25% chance of landing picks 11-14.

Then, usually by the end of January the teams in each tier are about 80% set in stone. Something would really have to go wrong for a Tier 2 team to lose enough games to wind up in Tier 1. Injuries to your star players for example. However, it just wouldn't make sense for a Tier 2 team try to tank super hard, throwing away tons of games, looking like ass to your fans, becoming a joke in the league, just to get a 20% shot at a first overall pick, who by the way, only has about a 40% chance of becoming a super-star in the league. It just isn't worth it.

A VERY SIMPLE FIX... but the owners would rather stick with their 'secret' back room draft where who knows what really goes on (some sort of draft plus auction for position?), plus they get to keep the whole tanking problem that makes the league look lame (from a lack of year round competitiveness perspective).

But ... nope.... lets publicly and financially go after the insider who merely stated the obvious halfway through the season during a meeting with his players.

Silver needs to call his own meeting, with the owners, and let them know that their business is starting to look like a joke. More like the WWE than the NBA. Sooner or later people are going to start calling it Basketball Entertainment instead of a sport. Look at what happens when you make your business/game/sport just a little too distasteful to the casual fan. You start getting massive drops in ratings and even attendance - NFL style. Do the owners really want to keep going down this path? It will cost them eventually.

Fix the fricking draft and discourage tanking with the method above.

Make referees accountable for blown calls. Even a simple coaches challenge system for non-calls or blown calls would add accountability. However, publicly shaming or firing a few refs would go a long way as well.

These two small changes can reverse the downward trajectory the league is on now and eventually help them become the premier sports league in the world instead.

Come on Silver, find a way to get through to the owners. Save this game from and for the bozos who control it. The fans will thank you if you succeed. Hey, you might even create a legacy for yourself that future generations will look back on and appreciate.

I called it and expected to happen. But should be a penalty as lose draft pick or get his pick moved some slots.

Charging him some money wont do anything as it is like taking a penny.
