Bucks Have Jeff Van Gundy, Kevin McHale On List Of Head Coach Candidates

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Tue Mar 20, 2018 7:49 pm

The Milwaukee Bucks fired Jason Kidd as head coach in January and elevated Joe Prunty to the job on an interim basis.

The Bucks are unlikely to retain Prunty unless they win a playoff series.

If the Bucks do move on from Prunty, the belief is they want to make a big splash with their head coaching hire.

Sources say Jeff van Gundy and Kevin McHale are already on Milwaukee's list of candidates. Monty Williams, David Fizdale have also been mentioned as likely candidates.

Rick Pitino could also even receive at least exploratory interest.

Why Kevin Mchale? Look at how good the Rockets became after they got rid of him.

Hope some team takes JVG..... can't stand listening to this Buffon announce games. The quicker we get him off broadcast the better.

Hopefully, someone also takes Mark Jackson too so that we don't have 2 self-absorbed idiots that don't talk about basketball nor the game their broadcasting about and put someone who actually does.

JVG is interesting, but not sure if he can adapt to the modern game. Would like to see how it goes.

McFail??!! Are they gonna start all over again?

Well, it's just a list, Fizdale and Monty make sense.

The Bucks should hire Fizdale, one of the best minds in the coaching field. Young. Smart. Passionate. Forward thinking. The Grizz grossly overachieved in 2016-17 through a bunch of injuries and then one little disagreement with Gasol and suddenly he’s unemplyoed.

Totally agree. And the Bucks have the personnel to be an amazing defensive team. Right up his alley. Gotta go Fizdale here.

Pitino? It didn’t work the first time around (Celtics). I’d go with JVG.

And while i understand JVG was once a top coach, he’s been out of the coaching for almost 15 years and the game has completely changed. That hire would worry me if I was a bucks fan.

Jeff Van Gundy is a no brainer move. He's been the best coach available for nearly a decade now.

I agree. He has garnered interest over his last stint numerous times- he just doesn't seem that easy to convince. He isn't going to take just any job. He has a zero tolerance policy for BS.

He can only be the "best coach available" if he is actually available. Coaching is a grind and highly stressful. He's being paid pretty well just to talk basketball right now.

Give Jeff Giannas and you have the next defensive player of the year. Jeff is a defensive guru

Lol, all these old candidates. Go with someone a bit younger. Fizdale is a perfect candidate.

Meh…I don’t know. Van Gundy was a defensive guru partially because they mugged and smashed anyone in the lane. It’s a different game now. Not saying he is a bad coach, but his success was in a totally different era of play.

Don't see how JVG would be bad hire. His team will immediately become much better defensively and with good defense you can always be competitive. He'll need some help offensively but I don't think that will be as big a problem as some think.

He’d have to adjust absolutely everything he did previously as a coach if he returned now. He was a top coach back when pace was non existent, handchecking was legal, iso was king and playoff games finished 70-68.

Doesn't he have something in his contract with ESPN that wouldn't allow him to coach without some form of buyout?
