The Atlanta Hawks lead the NBA in dead cap space with $32 million (32 percent of total salary), which means salaries for players not on the roster.

Jamal Crawford represents $10.9 million of that amount following his release in July. Marco Belinelli, Ersan Ilyasova and Richard Jefferson are also included on the dead money.

The Chicago Bulls rank second at $26.3 million, followed by the Phoenix Suns at $18.6 million, Sacramento Kings at $18 million and Milwaukee Bucks at $16.1 million.

Is this the first time in the last decade that the Knicks didn't lead in this category? The Noah money must not count as dead, since he's sitting at home and getting paid LOL!

Noah is still alive in terms of cap space.

OP: Who cares about dead cap space this season? It's next season that's important.

Poor Noah!

I think it's interesting that we call it dead cap space. It isn't "cap space" at all...
"Dead cap occupancy" maybe? "Dead cap consumption"?

Don't forget Luol Deng and good old Deron Williams who seems to have retired. Unlike these clowns at least Chris Bosh was earning his dough by playing at an all star level before the blood clots forced him into retirement.

We have a winner!

"Cap Zombies" is the perfect epithet for the likes of Noah, Deng, etc. The contractually un-dead! They eat cap space instead of brains.

The Hawks are plagued with "cap phantoms" (cap-paritions?). You can't see or touch them but you know they exist because they keep eating you cap long after they're dead.

 cap phantoms, cap-paritions both really cool.

This is why NBA needs to become more like the NFL, where you don't have to fully guarantee contracts. I can't count the amount of dudes that get big deals and then fall apart or their career ends and they still get paid for 3-4 more years.
