Wendell Carter Jr. remains undecided about whether to declare for the 2018 NBA Draft.
Carter's parents have opposing views on what he should decide.
"I told him I wanted him to come back," Carter's mom Kylia Carter told The Undefeated. "His jaw dropped. It has nothing to do with basketball. It's about you. It's about who he is. He is a student at core. Yes, he is a great basketball player. But he's an 18-year-old kid. He is having a tug with a heart and his mind. I don't feel for him because I think it's good for him that he is going through this struggle. It's his decision. He has to live with it."
Carter is expected to be a lottery pick if he leaves Duke.

Let's stop the games, of course he's going to declare. He's a likely lottery pick, nobody can turn that down.

Agreed. College is fun. He can get more mature and better prepared without the weighty expectations that come with being a professional.
Once you go pro, there's no turning back.

Exactly. He can pay his Harvard tuition in a month if they even wanted to charge him. If he's that much of a bookworm, he can read on the plane instead of playing Call of Duty.

This is such a beautiful play by Carter's team... this will drive his name up in talks and set out some very clear contenders of who wants him, which will allow him to control his physicals more, which shuts some teams out, which in the long term tends to drive the price up. BRAVO!!!

SHRAGGY? Go back and get a bunch of people paid while you take all the risk and not get paid? or go top 10? hmmmm .....we are not really discussing this right? maturity , polished game? I LOOOOOVE me some Coach K but he has a long record of not really developing big men at a high success rate....he uses bigs as a backup plan to his scheme. NO ONE SHOULD EVER STAY TO HAVE FUN,POLISH THEIR GAME, JUST TO GRADUATE FROM THIS PONZI SCHEME CALLED THE NCAA. Go get yours because if you get hurt they wont give you your past dues..

I'm a fan of players going pro if they're able to play in the NBA as soon as they can too but damn. If the guy wants to stay in school let him stay in school. Also the world doesn't owe you millions of dollars just for being a talented athlete. If he's able to use his talent to make money that's awesome. But no one "owes" him anything for being good at basketball.

It's...a more nuanced social issue than that. And throwing money at a kid isn't a cure all solution.
The world is filled with other kids who left, flunked out of the league, ended up broke and bitter with few options.
Undecuated, unemployed black men don't tend to do well in this society. A little extra time spent preparing for that spotlight and the expectations is not a bad idea.
In a weaker 2019 draft, he even has a shot to go higher and increase his earning potential, too.

Many say next year is a "weaker" draft but the names in that draft are so big its going to be a HUGE draft based on names and his style will not be as high when you have a chance to draft Zion jumping in and out of the gym, Cam shooting and driving like a young Brandon Roy, RJ turning heads with his shot, thats just Duke. UofA has a huge 4/5 duo coming in who will out name WCJ.
I am not here to tell people how to spend their money, I am just saying get it while you can. Yes society as a whole should look into how we can shape the youth better. in a perfect world, everyone would stay 4 years and no one would go to pros from HS. But we are not in that world.
But is college teaching them to be that.... do you not know whats going on with kids getting paid to go to "school"
at least in the NBA they are learning to be professional and at least they have an opportunity to provide for their family in college they dont have that same chance.

I see your point but staying for year 3 does not get you a degree or a job. And if you are smart enough to recognize that staying in school may help better prepare you for the spotlight than you are probably smart enough to not blow the $10M+ that a top 10 pick is guaranteed. I own a small business and I will likely not clear $2M by the time I retire 20 years from now. If he just put away 100K he could finish his degree whenever his career is over. Or he could continue with online and summer classes while in the NBA.
