Knicks Plan On Using Stretch Provision On Joakim Noah In September

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Wed Aug 8, 2018 10:24 pm

The New York Knicks are unlikely to bring Joakim Noah back into the organization under David Fizdale. The Knicks plan to part ways with Noah unless they can find a trade involving his two years and $37.8 million remaining on his dea.

The Knicks will use the NBA's waive-and-stretch provision to release Noah after Sept. 1.

After the hiring of Fizdale in June, Knicks management didn't rule out the possibility of Noah rejoining the organization for the 2018-19 season.

Scott Perry has been attempting to move Noah but hasn't come close to finding a deal.

Noah and the Knicks separated in February following a heated argument between Noah and ex-coach Jeff Hornacek.

Phil Jackson signed Noah to a four-year, $72 million deal in 2016.

Why would it make sense for both parties?

He might be able to help a contender with a few minutes per game?

Anderson is a useful player and doesn't make trouble.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Seems like a terrible idea, that's going to be over $7 million in cap space wasted a year for the next 5 seasons?

Would make more sense to just wait out the final two years of the deal and be done with it.

Terrible nonsensical move. Why would you stretch him with 2 more years when you can wait til next year and stretch him with only 1 more year?

Why announce this now? The Knicks season is most likely over with Porzingis out for about half the season. Develop the young players and see if Noah has anything left in the tank. If he doesn't then re-visit this later on in the year or at the end of the season. That's my two cents.

That is essentially what they are doing when you waive post September 1st.

If a player is waived between September 1 and June 30, his current-year salary is paid on its normal schedule, with any subsequent years spread over twice the number of remaining years, plus one.

I think they should wait though. Go into free agency next year and if they need the space then you pull the trigger then. If you can't land any big guns, then just go ahead and take the hit instead of spreading it out over 3 years.

I guess it's cuz it's nice gesture? Getting rid of a distraction and get a roster spot. It's nice to be over the Phil era.

Or the Knicks are just a play thing for Dolan rather than a serious competitor?

Send him to LAL for Luol Deng.

He can spell McGee when he forgets which hoop to dunk on, and Deng can mentor the Knicks young wings.

Why? Just sit him for this lost season and waive and stretch him next fall.

That's not how this plan works. If The Cut and stretch him now is would be 7 million over 5.
If they do it after Sept 1st they paying him his 18 million salary for this year.
Then Next year salary will be split up like 6.5 Million over 3 years.

With Next year being the crazy FA class. Knicks are trying to get money off the books.
Doing this will give them a extra 12 million.

its ironic Joakim and Deng got similar 4year deals then almost immediately they were seen as overpriced and inefficient not good enough to play out/fulfill the contract, where was the hindsight from the gm's

..and I can see both of them going to Minnesota after this is over with.

Funny how they went from people saying they were getting run into the ground in Chicago to not playing at all on their respective teams.
