DeMar DeRozan Told By Gregg Popovich To Shoot With 'No Guilt'

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Tue Dec 4, 2018 6:57 am

DeMar DeRozan credits Gregg Popovich for his recent 36-point outburst against the Portland Trail Blazers.

DeRozan says Popovich has been "preaching" to him to shoot with "no guilt" as he scored 15 straight points in the third quarter after starting the game shooting 3 of 12 from the field.

DeRozan is averaging 24.3 points on 48.2% shooting this season, including a career high 6 assists and 5.7 rebounds per game.

"He's been around a long time. He's very confident, and he knows what he can do," said Popovich. "That's not going to bother him if he misses a few shots. Scorers shouldn't have a conscience."

Lol I guess Pop never watched Raptors in the playoffs! In the playoffs, Demar's nickname is Costco Kobe.

He's shooting 1.4 three's per game.... which is exactly what poor 3pt shooters should do. I'm not sure how you think you have an insult in there.

The insult is that he's only made 18% of the threes he's attempted... as a shooting guard. Even Javale McGee is shooting better from deep than that!

Thus he's not taking threes rather than forcing threes because the direction the league was going. Josh Smith might still be in the league if he had that kind of self control. San Antonio is #1 in the league in 3pt% because the right players are taking the three's. DeMar is self aware enough to know that that is not him.

Between the team's 3pt% and his stat line of 24.3 points on 48.2% shooting, and 6 assists and 5.7 rebounds, they seem to be doing just fine with his game. I think SA came out of the Kawhi Leonard situation about as well as they could.

He's not self aware enough to know that he should've attempted 0 threes this season if that was the case. DeMar is on pace to attempt 117 threes and make 21. That's very embarrassing for a shooting guard.

It would be interesting to see how many of DeMar's three's this season were late clock bailouts or half-court heaves at the buzzer. He's definitely not looking for that shot. He's 10th in MPG and 265th in 3PA.

But I think you're putting too much meaning behind the word "shooting" in the term "shooting guard." A better term is "off-guard." There is nothing historically accurate in assuming that a shooting guard must have range. It's just a generic position title for a guard that is not not your primary ball handler.

Dwyane Wade shot worse than that from 3pt for two entire seasons. He was an all-star both of those seasons.
Jordan shot the same or worse in four seasons. He was an all-star all four seasons. In his final MVP season he shot 13.2% from 3pt. Disgraceful! :D
