Andrew Wiggins Gets Booed At Home, Criticizes Fans

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Sat Dec 29, 2018 7:58 am

Andrew Wiggins was booed at home during the Minnesota Timberwolves' 123-120 overtime loss to the Atlanta Hawks.

Wiggins missed a potentially game-tying free throw with 4.5 seconds left in overtime, sparking the crowd reaction. Shooting 75% from the free-throw line on the season, he was 5-12 from the charity stripe for the game.

Following the game, Wiggins addressed the boos by saying "that’s fans for you. We’ve got some s---ty fans and we’ve got some good fans. That’s just how it works.”

I'm not an advocate for booing my own team/players but if you're going to earn the kind of bread that keeps your team's cap (and winning aspirations) hostage, you better accept the expectations that come with it.

All you do is pay premiums that make the owner richer and the working class poorer. One would assume from a business perspective, you're fairly clueless if you're a fan.

Wiggins is a role player / bench guy who is getting paid like a superstar. It's only natural that fans feel like they've been scammed. Relative to his contract, Wiggins plays like trash. Heck, I wouldn't be satisfied with that production even if he was on a rookie contract. Plus he's turning 24 in a couple of months, so he probably won't get much better than this. If anything, I have a feeling he'll be regressing.

Is anyone still arguing wiggens is better than love? And that it was such a big mistake making that trade?

Who are you referring to as “the working class poor” in this scenario?

Basketball player by trade or by passion?
These things tend not to always be binary.
He needs a change of scenery.

Wiggins is payed on having superstar potential not what he is right now.
Sometimes it takes guys time. Look at Victor Oladipo and how much he has improved.

2 seasons ago Wiggins was a near 24ppg scorer ... fast forward today he is being made out to be the scapegoat for all of Minnesota's failings.

Meanwhile KAT, the so-called franchise player, is never held accountable for his complete lack of defense and being completely exposed in the playoffs ( courtesy Capela ). KAT was drafted by Minnesota, Wiggins was not ( acquired in a draft day deal for Kevin Love ).

If there is anyone to blame or boo - it is Tom Thibodeau : defacto GM / Coach / Pres of the Wolves.

Thibs accomplishments :
1) Trading for Jimmy Butler for a young talented core of Laurie M. (7th pick ) / Lavine / Kris Dunn
2) Caving into Jimmy Butler's trade demands 1 and half seasons later for Covington / Saric / Bayless / draft pick ( 2nd round )
3) Starting Derrick Rose ( reclamation project ) immediately instead of existing pg Jeff Teague / Tyus Jones

Clearly the boos need to be directed elsewhere.

As a Kansas fan, I had higher hopes for Wiggins than this.

He is probably the most tenured player on the roster, and has the highest salary. He needs to lead. It starts on the court, but extends to how you present yourself to your fanbase. Most fans would boo if your team blew a game this horrendously, and the leader needs to shoulder the responsibility with dignity. "We need to do better, I understand their frustration..." "We have to turn the page, and bring better effort going forward..." "Tomorrow's another day, hopefully the fans will see a performance they can cheer...".

Andrew might have 99 positive sound bytes, extolling the virtues of his Wolves' faithful following. But all it takes is one negative quote, and he'll be remembered for this more than anything else. The Wolves FO should look to trade Wiggins, but he may have just cratered his market value even further.
Some people really have a way with words. Other people... not... have... way.
