Patrick McCaw Joins Cavs On Two-Year, Non-Guaranteed Contract

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Mon Dec 31, 2018 7:25 am

Patrick McCaw officially joined the Cleveland Cavaliers after the Golden State Warriors declined to match the Cavs' two-year, $6 million offer sheet.

The 23-year-old McCaw's contract is non-guaranteed, meaning that the Cavs have until January 7th to decide whether they want to keep him on the roster and pay a pro-rated $1.7 million for the rest of the season. The second-year of the deal is also non-guaranteed.

McCaw cannot get traded this season once his contract becomes guaranteed after January 7th.

McCaw averaged 4 points and 1.7 rebounds last season for the Warriors.

The signing also keeps the Warriors' 15th roster spot open.

Was a bluff by the Warriors so the contenders didn't try to steal him.

They did offer McCaw a $2.4 M guaranteed deal the first year (total $5.2 M for two), but he refused to sign. The lux tax hit would've been $9 M so it's not like they were bluffing. The situation changed after that. If McCaw doesn't make it past Jan 7, then he becomes an UFA, but lost all that money.

This would assume that McCaw was already a good player. At this point he’s just a marginal prospect. If he was good, the Warriors would just match such a low risk contract right?

$1.7 million for a guy who may be something, otherwise they can cut him loose in the offseason without penalty.

$3 million next year if he shows promise. Not a bad move by the Cavs.

Not true that he can't be traded - he can be traded with his consent.

I think he cares more about playing time though. Money not an issue for him right now. If he becomes a UFA, i think he will go for a team that gives him some pt.

He's a weird ass dude to try to get your head around. His regular season numbers are horrendous but are nearly twice as good in the playoffs.

15 PER.... .576 true shooting in 21 playoff games 9.4 minutes per game

8 PER...... .510 true shooting 128 games at 15.9 minutes per game

Now the regular season numbers are certainly a far far bigger sample but bringing it pretty well at his age in the playoffs does portend some upside. He's worth a 1.7 million dollar flier and to have him locked in next year if you want him IMO. I do think he will ever be good though.

More likely to get the pt and be retained with all of CLE injuries and he is a good fit in CLE .

He just bet on himself to become worthy of more than a career backup.
He might not ever get awards as a team member, but he'll have a lot more chances to play , and accomplish individual achievements and that in itself is really all that should matter too anyone who loves the game/ getting to play.

He’s unlikely to get at least 4 of those 5 in Cleveland but good luck Pat.
