The Sacramento Kings have agreed to acquire Harrison Barnes from the Dallas Mavericks for Justin Jackson and Zach Randolph.

The Kings will no longer have max cap space this offseason.

No it makes sense - the Kings have had a fetish for Barnes since the 2012 nba draft when they passed on him to pick Thomas Robinson at #5 who turned out to be a bust. The Kings also were interested in Barnes as a rfa in 2016 but he signed his max offer sheet with the mavs. The Kings were going to go after him as a free agent this summer when he opts out but by trading for him now they acquire his bird rights and can resign him to a 5 year max contract. The mavs did this deal to get below the luxury tax and save millions their payroll was too high after they ate all the bad knicks salary in the Porzingis trade. Mavs save money and Kings acquire leverage to retain Barnes in free agency. Lol Barnes might not even take a meeting with Kings if he became a UFA and they were one of many teams that could offer him a 4 year max deal.

Mavs tanking to add Zion Williamson to Luca and KP. The pick they owe Hawks from the Doncic trade is top 5 protected so they are guaranteed to keep it if they get one of the two worst records in the league by season end if they finish a little better they still have decent odds in the draft lottery to move into the top three.

Mixed bag on this one, on one hand they didn't really need him and he makes a lot of money, on the other hand, they got him for almost nothing and aren't a hot spot free agent landing spot, so they grabbed what they could.

Isn't Barnes just a veteran poor mans version of Bagley??
Sure Barnes can shoot much better right now, but Bagley is already better in some ways and is a rookie.
So they obviously plan to play Barnes at the 3 which means they see Bogdon as a permanent bench player/spot starter or plan to move him still.

Boston owns the Kings pick protected for number 1 for the 2019 nba draft so they basically have no pick and all the incentive to make the playoffs. That is why Kings are going all in.

So what players do you think were going to sign with them? They got not pick this year so it not like they are sacrificing anything. Barnes is capable of guarding Lebron, Durant etc guys like that and they do need that if they want to make the playoffs next year.

So much wrong with this statement lol. First, the Mavs were no where near having to pay the tax, in fact, they had one of the lowest payrolls of all teams this year. Second, if Harrison Barnes gets paid a max 5 year deal, then I will forever crown the Kings the worst franchise in sports history.

Dallas absorbed $30 million in salary from the Knicks by taking on Hardaway and Lee. While he might be wrong about the proximity of the Mavs payroll to the tax threshold, the bigger point is that Dallas needed more space under the salary cap to both resign Porzingis AND go after additional talent.
