Knicks Valued At $4 Billion, Most Valuable Team In NBA According To Forbes

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Sun Feb 10, 2019 8:00 pm

The New York Knicks are worth $4 billion, making them the most valuable team in the NBA according to a recent study from Forbes.

The average NBA team is worth $1.9 billion, which is up 13% from last year and three times the amount from 5 years ago. Local TV deals and new stadiums have played a significant role in increasing a team's value. The Bucks, who opened a new arena this season, have increased their value 145% to $1.35 billion since new ownership bought the team in 2014.

The Warriors have increased their value by 367% over the last 5 years. The Jazz made the most revenue per fan at $101.

The Cavs were the only team to lose money and decline in value last year, according to the study.

What is the deal with Knicks being so 'valuable'? One of the most disfunctional franchises of the last couple of decades.. And it's not like they are the only team playing in NY market. So why exactly are they so highly regarded?

NY is the capital of the world , has nothing to do with the team and our success we just happen to be located in NY

They also outright own their arena and own a tv network in one of the largest media markets in the world. Honestly 4 billion is probably a conservative estimate.

It's actually a combination of both. Success does increase value. If the Knicks were more successful, they'd be worth a lot more.

Thats great for Mr. Dolan but it doesn't do jack for the loyal knick fans that made that possible, putting up with a mediocre team for so long. KNICK FANS NEED TO TELL JAMES DOLAN TO SELL THE TEAM.

This is so skewed & doesn't take into account global revenue. The lone reason they're estimated at this # is solely due to exorbitance of ticket & merch prices in the Manhattan area. No other reason. Complete non factor internationally. No one really knows what the Knicks is outside the tri-state area.

This is without a superstar.

Lord if our big 3 ended up on that team instead, it would have been Dallas Cowboys level of popularity.

Bangkok? What? Of all the cities to choose...

Tokyo? Hong Kong? Beijing? Singapore?

All more important cities, in Asia alone.

They are profitable like the lakers - the owner is not paying out of pocket to maintain his ownership of the team. Even when the knicks were even more dysfunctional under Isaiah Thomas leadership and his lawsuits they were still padding cash into James Dolan's pockets. The Lakers are a family business and to my knowledge the main source of income for Jerry Buss's children - so even after the lakers pay ridiculous luxury tax in their past championship seasons they were raking in large profits converted into annual income for the various members of the family. Compare this to situations in New Orleans and Memphis where the ownership keeps changing because whoever buys the team is paying to get future roi on their equity in the team while covering operating losses out of their pockets.

#1 place to visit in the world

I don't actually consider it the capital of the world, but many places can make an argument

The Celtics lead all other teams in the "Sport" categorization, $1,051 Million
vs "market", "brand", and "stadium".

Wonder what that represents.

no, the knicks doesn't own the MSG Stadium or the MSG network. The Knicks team is owned by the "MSG Company" which also owns the liberty, rangers, the MSG building, the Forum building in LA. The MSG network is a totally separate company and owned by "MSG Network". The "MSG Company" is under the stock symbol "MSG". The MSG network is under the stock symbol "MSGN".
