Duke Had Higher ESPN Ratings Than NBA During 18-19 Season

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Sun Apr 14, 2019 1:50 pm

Duke had a higher rating for their 26 games on ESPN this season than the network's 101 telecasts for the NBA.

Duke averaged 2.23 million viewers per telecast compared to 1.99 million for the NBA.

The statistics were featured in a Tweet by the Duke basketball program with an image of Zion Williamson attached and the hashtag #TheDukeEffect.

Williamson is expected to be the No. 1 overall pick in the draft and became one of college basketball's most celebrated players in several years.

Maybe League Pass Effect but still an amazing feat as this is proof if there wasn't already that Zion is the next big thing in the basketball world.

ESPN's telecast of NBA games is horrible...just like the rest of their programming.

Would be interested to see TNT's average number of viewers.

It's not the telecast, it's the players. More people tuning in to see Zion as an individual player vs loaded NBA teams.

Actually I think a better comparison would be Zion vs LeBron Harden or Curry games. That would likely be more accurate.

Exactly its on average so its not even that big a feat... If Durant goes to the Knicks oh boy NBA ratings overall will rise as about 7 teams will be competing for the title and New York will spike.. I truly believe they are trying to make Zion the next big thing face of the league even but I just don't think he has the talent to live up to it..

That can't be possible, I was told that the Warriors were good for the league because everyone loves dynasties. How can they lose to regular-season college basketball in the ratings?

Zion still got to prove against actuall physicall competition. its foolish to think he can just bully nba players because he can bully college players. Whats was the last time an explosive college players translated well to the NBA and didnt see his numbers drop drastically? Think about zach lavine and andrew wiggins. Zion also is just 6'7 , thats the same as klay thompson and Zion clearly isnt an 2guard

And all it cost Duke and the NCAA was $40,000.
