Rockets, Pelicans Interested In Hiring Tyronn Lue For Lead Assistant Job

The Houston Rockets and New Orleans Pelicans have pursued Tyronn Lue for a lead assistant role, but he remains focused on a return to the NBA in a head coaching role.

Lue was fired by the Cleveland Cavaliers in October of last year.

Lue was offered the Los Angeles Lakers' coaching job, but was unable to agree to contract terms.

The Rockets are working to add to their staff following the departures of assistant coaches Jeff Bzdelik, Mitch Vanya and Roy Rogers, player development assistant Irv Roland and video coordinator John Cho.

The Rockets offered Lue an assistant coaching job soon after he was fired in October.

Lue has history working with New Orleans head coach Alvin Gentry and executive Vice President David Griffin.

I'm pretty sure Lue is viewed as an LBJ coach and most teams don't run a "give it to our best player and let him figure it out" offence 100% of the time... I think he still needs to prove he can coach a team without a takeover superstar doing a majority of the play calling.

I would keep those two no matter what tbh. If you mean trade them. If you mean playing wise... not right away that's for sure, but maybe they mess it up again (LAL).

Makes perfect sense. Less likely to have panic attacks as an assistant. He probably sabotaged the Laker gig because he knew he wasn't cut out for that kind of pressure.

That head coaching job was like a back handed compliment.

They offered him less than average salary for less than average years - they offered him a worse deal than they offered fricking Luke Walton. Say what you want about Lue, but he's won a ring. Only so many coaches can say that, and he did manage some huge egos for a few years to the point that you could see it even took a toll on him.

Lue isn't a great coach by any stretch of the imagination, but in his position, even I'd rather take the assisstant job and not have any pressure or expectations while collecting cheques than accept a less than fair offer just to be a temporary headcoach while LeBron was around.
