The Houston Rockets and Mike D'Antoni have held discussions this offseason on a contract extensions, but those talks have stalled.

D'Antoni has one season remaining on his deal.

The Rockets have tried to make D'Antoni's next deal incentive heavy, which he has led him to respond that he would be fine with that type of deal if it is also applied retroactively. D'Antoni helped lead the Rockets to the Western Conference Finals in 17-18.

I'm aware of the definition. The problem is the story is still hard to understand.

To me it suggests D'Antoni is sarcastically saying he is fine with the deal aka he wants to be recognized for reaching the finals in the past two years.

But the deal does not start until 12 months from now, so there a retroactive deal does not make sense. Hence why it must be sarcasm.

Blatant disrespect from MDA highlights how upset he is over his staff being dismissed.

Hey Mike, you don’t have it so bad. Remember you were once in LAL at one time... look at it now!

Not at all. They either believe in him or they don't. HOU is coming off a season that is widely viewed as a disappointment, but that isn't on Mike D or the starters. Guys 6-10 and their playoff stats:

Austin Rivers 7/2/1 (actually fit that roll pretty well but ideally he'd be their 7th or 8th man)
Danuel House 5/3/0 (G-League call up was virtually unplayable (-24.6 eDiff))
Iman Shumpert 4/2/0 (He's Iman Shumpert (-13.8 eDiff))
Keneth Faried 4/4/0 (I like him but he's useless in many situations)
Gerald Green 4/1/0 (A chucker that shot 30% from the floor and can't defend a fire hydrant (-16.1 eDiff))

All Mike is saying that is he doesn't want to penalized for HOU failing to build a viable team. The Rockets are a top-heavy core surrounded by garbage. They need talent and it's very difficult to see where it's going to come from. All their issues stem from salary cap restraints, but the coaches salary doesn't effect that. If they are serious about winning they will pay the coach that unlocked Harden and go all in to build a better team around him. If they are going to pinch pennies with their HOF coach he should just cut bait now. That's your sign that the new management isn't going anywhere.

The house of cards is crumbling.

Tilman, despite being worth $4.7b, spent nearly half of his net worth to purchase the team, and now looks like someone who bought a million dollar house and got stingy about spending on furniture.

Their best chance is actually next season hoping for a KD departure. Unfortunately, they might be too cheap to field a team (and its coaching staff) capable of beating the potentially KD-less Warriors.

Their house is crumbling even before KD decides on his free agency.

Mike's rotations were terrible. The Rockets could have played a lot better if they used the same team they learned was the best team during the regular season. Instead they went completely away from it and started playing Shumpert and Nene major minutes.

Incentive laden deal with no roster control sounds bad.

Ding ding ding. To be fair, dumping CP3 might be a good LT move if they can get value for him but otherwise just a short term profit maximization exercise.

Morey never wanted to hire MDA in the first place. That was the old owner's decision. He's probably hoping Mike just quits.

Smart in Mike’s part. Get paid big or get out of town with his reputation intact. Houston is going nowhere and is getting there fast. New owner looks like a clown. Team is getting long in the tooth with no real path to get better. Get a golden parachute or get bought out.

I'm confused... Which one of the guys I mentioned did you want to see more of?
