Warriors Planned On Pitching Kevin Durant On Long-Term Deal With Trade Request Optionality

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Wed Jun 12, 2019 2:49 pm

The Golden State Warriors were prepared to pitch Kevin Durant on a long-term contract this offseason with the understanding that they would grant him a trade should he wish to leave the team at any point, according to a source that spoke with Frank Isola of The Athletic.

The Warriors could still discuss that type of scenario with Durant even with him likely out most if not all of the 19-20 season.

Durant has been most strongly linked with the New York Knicks throughout the season.

Durant has signed a series of one-plus-one contract since joining the Warriors in 2016.

A 50% healthy Durant is enough to propel Warriors to win Championship every year in my opinion. So, assuming he's coming back and he's not the same player...let's say 70% of what he was because his length and his shooting stroke ain't ever going to change and he's still going to impact the game....that IS ENOUGH to get the Warriors ring every year imo!

How exactly do you draft a binding "trade REQUEST" option? And, if you have an understanding that isn't binding, how is that a contract? Oh yeah, and how do you make an offer that passes the CBA requirement and has a player REQUEST option?

They'll struggle next year with his cap hit basically eliminating any real bench possibility.
Ring chasers may be less inclined to go there knowing it's not a sure thing.

If doctors deem KD out for season, GS can apply to the League for a Disabled Player Exception which the team can use to sign a player at half of KD's 2019/20 salary

Assuming KD opts in to the Player's Option of his current contract and sign an extension, GS could be entitled to a DPE to the value of $15.75m

Only problem is by the time you get the DPE there will be nothing but scraps left in free agency.

I might be wrong, but I think that only applies to a career ending injury. I don’t think you can do that for someone who is in the middle of their contract then continue their contract the next year

It is for the season, Celtics got it for hayward. If you have a career ending injury, the salary can be wiped from the cap entirely, assuming some criteria are met

You guys know nothing even if KD walked the warriors would have no cap space.. Klay would be maxed and there would be Iggy on 16 mill Dray on 20 plus mill Klay 35 mill and Curry 40 plus mill at best they open 4 mill.. They will have a mid level exception if Boogie leaves however if Boogie stays he would be much better for the run.. They could pitch someone like wes matthews on solid playing time on a contender.. btw they got no one this year but a broken down Boogie and a washed up Bogut..

Genius.... you can literally resign him and dangle the carrot (top player in the NBA) for a king's ransom of picks, great players and cap relief. now with steph, thompson and draymond probably resigned you will have all the assets needed to sustain the team building through the draft and picking other great talent from the league.

by the time they have reup on the youngems.... they others will be riding off their massive contracts.

you could sign somewhere else right now, but how about resigning here and becoming next melo down the road and playing on an empty roster after we profit some more of you?

The only way I see this working is if they add a trade clause where KD gets full control over destination and trade package. That way he can pick what team he wants to go to and can veto trades if he thinks the team he's going to is losing too much talent.

Otherwise how is that even appealing for KD. Hey, we can trade to later if you want and since you are a top 2 player in the league we can basically gut the other team and let you go to a team that won't make the playoffs once we get all their assets for you.

No, they can sign a FA for half of KD's salary or the non-tax MLE, whichever is smaller. In this case the MLE, projected about $9.7M.

did you not read what you were responding to? it is a disabled player EXCEPTION. you even mentioned the mid level exception, so you must know what it means

as for "free agency scraps", i'm guessing that the exception could be split amongst multiple players, which would do wonders for their depth. also, they might be able to use it to acquire a player via trade

The DPE which GSW would be granted would allow them to sign for the mid level tax free exemption which is around 8 million and you could only sign a free agent for one year with it.. You could try to trade up to 100K over the DPE.. So you will get someone but since it's one year they are not going to be that good.. Maybe you can pull off a trade for Lou Williams..
