2019 NBA Finals Ratings Up From 2017, 2018

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Fri Jun 14, 2019 2:58 pm

ABC's coverage of Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals in which the Toronto Raptors defeated the Golden State Warriors to win their first title drew a 13.2 overnight rating.

Game 6 peaked with a 17.5 rating, which was higher than any part of the 2018 NBA Finals.

The series finished with a higher rating than both 2017 and 2018, which were won handily by the Warriors over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The ratings also exclude Canadian viewers.

Exciting dramatic basketball games draw. Doesn't matter the participants. I'm sure much of the US doesn't know 3/4 of the Raps but it was a tightly fought decently scoring series.

They are saying it is up from 2017 and 2018 WITHOUT Canadian viewers. So you can add another 7 or 8 Million on top of that.

And they tried to say it was the lowest ratings ever because there was no LeBron. These playoffs have had some of the worst analysis ever and that doesn't even include just basketball.

Huh ratings overall have been down because no LBJ.. But knowing that GSW would win made things boring too ironically the injuries to stars lifted the ratings cause of the hate for the most stacked team ever finally going to lose...

For the tv networks the Canadian viewers are not relevant for advertising sales.. also if LBJ had been in the playoffs overall ratings would be even higher and if GSW were fully healthy and sweeping the Raptors which would happen if Healthy then the ratings would of course also be down..

Was Lebron not in the finals in 2017 and 2018?

And of course Canadian ratings matter. They matter to the NBA and they matter to the networks in Canada.

The bulk of the NBA revenue comes from the US TV market.. I am not saying it's completely irrelevant however the bump in the Canadian market is not as relevant as the US due to win much of the money pouring in from the US networks.. So for instance if US networks were down in ratings and Canada saw a huge bump it would not even go close to compensating.. As it was both were up to see the end of a dynasty..

The ratings for the east playoff run was better with LBJ but ppl stopped tuning into the cavs v warriors final when a sweep especially after the ruined game 1 was inevitable.. If Raptors had faced a fully healthy GSW rating would of been down again because we all know it would be a sweep.. Though at no point this year was GSW as dominant as years past..

The rating was not better soley because of LBJ, and you yourself said why - IT'S BECAUSE PEOPLE DON'T WANT TO WATCH INEVITABLE AND ONE SIDED SERIES. Imean who wants to watch a finals that are constantly a blowout. A lot of other factors also contribute like market sizes of the teams involved, dramas like the injuries that unfortunately happened in this year's finals, and storylines that the media is able to create.

Like it or not, the casuals are the ones bumping the ratings up and they won't simply watch NBA because they suddenly liked the sport. They watch because they hear interesting stuff on the news or other people around them. If you get them to watch and got bored from seeing a blowout game then you instantly lose those viewers.

Whoa. Did not expect that at all. So, the league really isn't as dependent on Lebron as everyone thought? Kudos to the Raptors and Warriors for giving us a great Finals with huge side orders of drama.

Toss in the Canadian ratings and the NBA hit this one out of the park.

Would love to see the worldwide numbers of the past 10 finals, have a feeling that this series would be close to the top with Canada and the rest of the world included, especially since Curry is so popular worldwide + the Raps have some well known international players(Gasol, Ibaka, Siakam, Lin).

I know ESPN/ABC only care about the American numbers, but Silver and the NBA definitely care about the worldwide viewership to help grow the league/sport internationally.

The NBA is fine....the league is healthy.......
