Kevin Durant Initially Objected To Sign-And-Trade, Forced Warriors To Include First Round Pick

Kevin Durant initially objected to the sign-and-trade scenario involving D'Angelo Russell going to the Golden State Warriors.

The Brooklyn Nets had enough cap space to sign Durant outright and there was no specific advantage for him to help the Warriors.

Multiple sources told Brian Windhorst that Durant didn't want to be traded for Russell straight up because he didn't think it was a fair deal. The Warriors had to convince Durant of the trade on top of the Nets.

The Warriors had to give up a first round pick for Durant to sign off on the deal, though it is top-20 protected next year.

Well he isn't wrong however after that he was convinced by a solitary top 20 protected first round pick that's all Warriors gave up to get Dlo.. Wow.. This sounds dumb..

He probably decided it was a good idea when it was determined he and Kyrie would need to take several million dollar discounts in order to get DeAndre Jordan his 4/40 contract if KD signed directly into cap space.

KD, Kyrie, and the Nets got a lot out of the S&T deal. I actually think the top-20 protected first was overkill.

Not after you consider that Rio has become one of the most overpaid players in the league with that contract.

yeah, the warriors gave up a heavily protected pick and 117 mil for russell. that's way too MUCH

amazing that a guy can sign a max deal as an afterthought. they now have 2 max players and another who will likely be maxed next season (draymond) and many wonder if they'll make the playoffs

Is Durant really so insecure that he was offended by the idea of being traded for "just" D'Lo?

Perhaps Durant was thinking about the best interest of his future team, whereby the Nets get another asset in the deal. For instance take the Lakers vs. Clippers judgment Kawhi was weighing out. Unconfirmed... I can only imagine that Kawhi took into account the roster depth. Similarly, Durant perchance demanded another asset to help his new team out.

Perchance? No chance.

Durant - he who famously goes online with burner accounts to defend himself - is ego driven and superficial. There isn't more to this story.

I think Durant believed it was unfair to the Nets because he was going to be injured the whole year.

Yes, and let's not forget that Durant's big ego took less money to bring more talent to the team - including most recently Deandre Jordan.

Many wonder if they make the playoffs!? LOL dude they’re still contenders when Klay gets good.
The overlooked part of this deal is that Russel can be traded with FRP’s for a star in a position of need. Or can they ship him for a solid bench to a team like NY, MIA, ORL, PHX, DET, Hawks(I believe he would fit really good with T.Young, but with Hurteur who knows.) among other teams

Klay probably won’t play this season and almost certainly won’t be 100% if he does come back early. Think about how bad Gordon Hayward looked when he returned this past season as he tried to work his way back.

I would personally put the Warriors much closer to the playoff bubble then in contention for the title, in large part because the WC playoff race looks like a bloodbath which will take 47+ wins again to qualify.

Ego and money aren't joined at the hip.

Durant cares more about his legacy than money. He worries primarily about how he's treated and how people talk about him, hence the burner accounts. He'll make 9 figures regardless.

He was helping us, even before he officially became a Net. And I think he wanted to stick it to the organization that played Russian roulette with his health. Go KD! Go Brooklyn!

KD got his full salary with the Nets *because* of the S&T. Without it, he and Kyrie would have needed to take less money in order to sign DeAndre to his 4/40 contract. That or gut the Nets team further for cap space.

The S&T deal was to the benefit of the Nets as it was to the Warriors even without the added top-20 protected first round pick (if not conveyed, then a second in 2025).

Thank you for the correction! I was working off the earlier reporting which suggested some goodwill by both KD and Kyrie to have DeAndre join the team.
