He's only 24 and his TS% was .598 in 9 games with CLE last season which tells me that much of his issue was situational. Don't get me wrong, he's a 7th or 8th man at best. But he's still got enough upside to be given a roster spot.

Aren’t all players on the end of the bench long shots?
With guys like Payne, RHJ and S Johnson who were all considered solid prospects at one point, you just hope to strike lightning in a bottle once

Well Stanley Johnson is 23 with 285 games under his belt and played last season. He came into the league at 19 (too young) and just needs a fresh start after Pelicans took a flyer on him after he didnt work out in Detroit.
Hollis Jefferson is 24 with 234 games under his belt who had a promising start to his career with Nets before he got hurt. He's got a positive career VORP and is an above-average defender with a career PER of 14.6
Trey Burke or Jerian Grant would have been better options but I guess they only offered so much to Payne and he performed well enough in summer league to get invited to training camp with some guaranteed money.

Johnston was an 8th pick, Payne a 14th pick and RHJ a 23rd pick. These signings are no worse than having those draft slots and bringing in 3 unproven rookies.
