The Sacramento Kings hope to sign Buddy Hield to a contract extension.

Hield would become a restricted free agent in 2020 if no deal is reached.

Vlade Divac indicated the two sides are working on an agreement.

“We are … every day is working and Buddy’s a big part of this team, and we’ll figure something out down the road,” Divac said. “We’re working on it and we’ll figure out something. Buddy is (a) very important piece to this franchise.”

I’m wondering what’s left to negotiate when we all know Vlade is going to pay him the max money for the max seasons?

I guess Hield might as well ask for a no-trade clause, a 15% trade kicker and a player option for the final season

Buddy is not eligible for a no-trade clause. However, the other two things you mention might be what Kings want they don't want to give Buddy a trade kicker or a 5th year opt out they want a firm 5 year commitment from him and don't want to be penalized if they trade him by having to pay out a trade kicker. Add to that Kings are a small market franchise so they likely don't want to include large signing bonuses that pay up most of Buddy's annual salary in the first half of the season as oppose to spread out where the team is also collecting home game revenue and other revenue sources to help cover the team payroll. Yes Vivek is a billionaire but he is always going to look toward saving a buck somewhere so his pockets stay more full. Rockets owner got Westbrook to renegotiate his signing bonuses and waive his 5th year player option as well as his trade kicker so he could be traded to Houston from OKC. This makes Westbrook a cheaper and better asset for Rockets then he would have been with an even higher salary and signing bonuses if they acquired him from OKC without any concessions on his part.

Dont NBA teams have to pay the full payroll amount to NBA head office before the start of the season..

Are you saying that Russell Westbrook waived his fifth year option and it's now it's only a four year deal?
Five year deal without the player option?
or otherwise?

I only recall that he restructured his bonuses and wasn't entitled to a trade kicker because he was already making the max.

I read Westbrook opted into his 5th year player option at Houston's request meaning they have him locked up for 4 seasons instead of three years. He already played year one of his supermax deal in OKC. I think Rockets did this as protection in case this Westbrook-Harden experiment implodes they will be able to trade Westbrook to another team that knows they have him under contract for certain at three more seasons. And if Rockets keep him they have salary cap certainty and don't have to plan around Westbrook's impending free agency and the decision of whether he will opt in or opt out. Lol Westbrook didn't give up any money he just opted in and restructured the way his salary is paid during the season.

Assuming a fully guaranteed max deal is a given, they must be negotiating options, early terminations, and trade kickers. There is also the possibility Hield doesn't want to play in Sacramento. His free agency would be restricted but he might want Kings to maximize the sweeteners if he prefers not to be in Sacramento.

He will be 27,5 when the contract kicks in. Not sure if he will improve much more at this point.

The 5 year max should be around 169M and the 4 year max around 125 M.

How much is he worth? Not sure about the max, but next years free agency doesn't look that great. Maybe someone would throw a close to 4 year max deal at him.

Kings wanted him... They saw him as steph2.0 At what stage does he start to play at that level before he gets $25m?
