Rockets Turn Nene's Contract Into Potential $10M Trade Chip With Creative Bonuses

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Thu Sep 12, 2019 12:17 am

The Houston Rockets signed Nene to a creative contract that will give the team flexibility using his contract on the trade market after January 15th.

Nene signed a two-year, $20 million deal, but the base compensation for 19-20 is $2.56 million with $7.44 million in likely bonuses, which brings his cap hit to $10 million this season. The full $10 million cap number can be used in a trade.

The bonuses in his contract are as follows:

1. $2.435 million for playing in at least 50 games with the Rockets winning 52 or more games.

2. $2.5 million for playing at least 25 games and the Rockets winning 52 or more games.

3. $2.5 million for playing at least 40 games and the Rockets winning 52 or more games.

Because Nene played in 42 games last season and the Rockets won 53 games, it is considered a likely bonus.

The $2.69 million in base compensation for the 20-21 season if Nene is not waived by February 15th.

Why does he get slighter more bonus for playing less games??

RealGM has posted it the wrong way around. It's 2.435 Mill is for 10 games and its 2.5 for each increasing bonus after that.

To further clarify my last post
The contract is:
1),$2.435M for playing at least 10 games and 52+ wins;
2) $2.5M for playing at least 25 games and 52+ wins;
3) $2.5M for playing at least 40 games and 52+ wins
The last sentence of this article about Nene playing 42 games and it being a likely bonus makes more sense too.
