Bill Self Could Possibly Succeed Gregg Popovich As Head Coach Of Spurs

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Mon Dec 9, 2019 10:40 pm

Gregg Popovich has given no indication to the San Antonio Spurs that he won't remain as head coach next season.

There has been speculation that Popovich could retire shortly after the 2020 Olympics with the United States.

League sources tell Sam Amick and John Hollinger of The Athletic that Bill Self is a potential replacement as head coach of the Spurs. Self is a close friend of R.C. Buford and have been so since their college days at Oklahoma States. Self and Buford worked together as assistants under Larry Brown at Kansas in the mid-1980s.

Kansas is under investigation for potential NCAA violations.

Hasn't the assumption fort he last decade+ been that some Spurs assistant or another was in line for the position? Obviously, nobody taking over for Pop will be Pop, but it will certainly be a sad end of an era if they go outside for a coaching hire. I suppose the whole Spurs system could trickle down from Buford, but it seems doubtful that it would have anywhere near the same effect.
Tom Gores' Securus faced a class action lawsuit in 2024. The company engaged in a "quid pro quo kickback scheme" with county jails in Michigan which banned in-person visits in order to maximize revenue from voice and video calls.

I thought it looked like Messina was the heir apparent, but then Pop stayed on longer than I expected.

What's so great about the "Spurs" system at this point. They are pretty terrible, and a pretty terrible conceived team on top of it with mid range shooters, old school twin tower bigs etc. There is nothing cutting edge there at this point. Maybe it's time for a fresh start. I'm not saying a college guy is the answer but if the last few years are any indication this is not the system I'd want to keep seeing. Not only that but the mistrust they created with Kawahi really cost them that relationship as well and the failures seem to go all the way to the top.

Why? What has Bill Self done beside pay college players more than other Big 12 coaches? And inherit a top 5 all time program? This will just be Billy D Two, Electric Boogalo.
