Knicks Offered Pelicans Package Built Around Kristpas Porzingis For Anthony Davis

The New York Knicks began gauging trade interest in Kristaps Porzingis early in 2019.

According to sources, the Knicks offered a package to the New Orleans Pelicans for Anthony Davis centered around Porzingis. Dell Demps showed little interest in that discussion and the Knicks took that as a possible indication that Porzingis may not receive as much interest as they were anticipating.

Once Porzingis and his brother, Janis, discovered the Knicks were discussing a trade with the Dallas Mavericks, they asked to be moved to either the Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Clippers, Toronto Raptors or Miami Heat. The meeting was brief and Porzingis was soon traded to the Mavericks.

Dozens of teams were confused why they never had a chance to make an offer for Porzingis.

He wouldn't have stayed in New Orleans, that's what Dell was thinking. As a Pelican fan we hated demps, but this was not one of his mistakes.

as a laker fan what dell demps did in hindsight was amazing, he fell on the sword for no apparent reason other than to appease popovich it seems

I had to think Phoenix would have made a big run at him (unless cap space was all they cared about).
Would love to be a fly on the wall during some GM calls. I hope someone spills the beans in a book about things that happened during the 2010-2020 years.

Every team was interested in Porzingis, just because one team didn’t want to trade you a top 5-6 player for him doesn’t mean there wasn’t much Interest. They didn’t even od their due diligence to find out what most teams would offer. Steve Mills and Scott Perry shouldn’t be running a professional basketball team.

As it turns out, the Knicks need Porzingis to partner with Robinson in the front court. They should have kept him rather than forking out big money to sign Julius Randle.

And it puzzles me why the Knicks FO fail to sign a proper veteran point guard in summer. It is not as if they do not have the means to do it. They can really use one now.

Looking at it now, KP is a decent piece on a good team, not even looking like the second best player on a real contender, not looking like a top 25 player. Not that they are looking to but I wonder how the Mavs would do trying to move him with this contract....Maybe he takes another big leap but failing that he is already overpaid. Agree Knicks underestimated their leverage last year when people assumed he was a top 25. Could have found something real with the draft picks rather than Denis Smith.
