NBA Announces G League Franchise In Mexico City

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Fri Dec 13, 2019 1:26 am

The NBA G League and Capitanes announced the club will join the NBA G League as its first team from outside the U.S. and Canada.

Capitanes becomes the NBA G League’s 29th team and will make its debut for the 2020-21 season. The team will play its NBA G League home games at the Gimnasio Juan de la Barrera in Mexico City.

The announcement was made by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, NBA G League President Shareef Abdur-Rahim, NBA Mexico Vice President and Managing Director Raul Zarraga and Capitanes co-owners Patricio Garza and Gilberto Hernández at the Arena Ciudad de Mexico prior to the Dallas Mavericks taking on the Detroit Pistons as part of The NBA Mexico Games 2019 presented by Nike.

Capitanes, which was established in 2016, currently competes in Mexico’s Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional. Starting next season, Capitanes will play in the NBA G League for an initial term of five years. The team is owned and operated by Moisés Cosío and a group of minority investors.

This just seems like an awful idea

Did a nba franchise do this? Or is it a independent team in the G league?
USA Celtics in full effect. Amazing chemistry building experience right there for the main core of the team

Proceeds to finish 7th and shames the entire nation!

Well the NBA did it...in the end. I don't see how it's "awful" in the least.

I like what international players and international play has brought to the NBA (for the most part). I think the NBA will be huge in Mexico City and if that takes one more country further away from soccer then I'm for it.

The great thing about international teams in my opinion is that there will eventually be better players as the sport spreads. The NBA was dying after Jordan and the greats of the 90s left. It truly sucked. International players helped bring it out of iso ball.... And I like the euro step...sue me.

Curious though, why are you not liking this idea...or even the idea of an NBA franchise moving there?

Is it political? Just curious..... If so, I can only say that the Canadian teams in the NBA nhl and mlb have had little to no political effect on international relations.

Basketball is a great game. More people should play. IMO
